Simple Ways To Tackle Fibromyalgia Pain

Fibromyalgia is a mysterious problem: researchers are still looking for what actually causes this condition. No matter what the cause may be, the effects are certainly devastating: people with Fibromyalgia suffer from chronic pain throughout the body, especially in large muscle groups along with stiffness and fatigue. This can have a severe impact on the overall quality of life as well as hamper everyday working capacity.

One of the most common symptoms of Fibromyalgia is pain. Many people feel that the pain seems to be concentrated in certain spots around the body, such as the shoulders, the back, hips, etc. Chronic pain can be highly distracting, leaving you feeling irritable and anxious. So, let’s focus on some pain-relieving strategies that you can use in your daily life in order to find some respite from the problem of Fibromyalgia.

Tackling Fibromyalgia pain

1. Take a warm bath: If you feel that the pain is gradually becoming unbearable, then you should take a warm bath or a shower. The warm water will help relieve the pain by dilating the blood vessels. This will also help the affected muscles relax.

2. Try Yoga: It is an ancient mind-body integration which will not only keep you fit but also reduce pain sensation. Yoga is routinely prescribed by experts around the world to people who suffer from chronic pain. Regular practice of Yoga will enhance stamina and bring balance to your emotions.

3. Get massage: This will help you relax mentally as well as physically. A good massage from a trained masseur will temporarily reduce pain sensation while releasing tension from major muscle groups. Massage will also uplift your mood. Before the session begins, remember to inform the masseur that you have Fibromyalgia. This will help him cater to your special needs.

4. Sleep well at night: Getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night is vital in fighting Fibromyalgia and staying fit. Sleep will minimize morning pain and stiffness and help you feel refreshed. Moreover, you are less likely to feel tired due to Fibromyalgia.

5. Avoid smoking: While it is common knowledge that smoking is bad for your lungs, researchers have found that tobacco distorts the body’s pain perception. Thus, you may feel in pain in spite of getting no external stimuli. So you should refrain from smoking in order to avoid associated complications.

Simple Prevention Tips For Sciatica

If you have been suffering from sharp pain in the thighs and buttocks for more than a week, and if the pain feels like it is “travelling” downwards, then there is a high probability that you are suffering from Sciatica.

In order to prevent Sciatica, you need to make appropriate changes in your general lifestyle. These changes will not just help you avoid the problem of Sciatica, they can ensure better overall health.

How to prevent Sciatica

1. Exercise regularly: This will improve blood circulation throughout your body and will help tone up the muscles. Moderate regular exercise also reduces the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Just 30 minutes of walking or jogging every day is sufficient to reduce the risk of Sciatica.

2. Maintain correct posture: If you sit for long periods of time, correct posture becomes all-the-more important. Without proper posture, you are putting your body at high risk of Sciatica, back and neck pain. So whenever you sit or stand, just take a few seconds to feel your posture. Keep your head, back and buttock in one straight line. This will help you work without becoming uncomfortable.

3. Sleep properly: Try to sleep on your side, with one leg placed on a small pillow. This will reduce the stress on your hips, thighs and knees. If you want to sleep on your back, then place a pillow under your knees. This will reduce stress on the hamstrings and back muscles.

4. Avoid lifting heavy objects: Such activities put stress on the bones and muscles in the back, which in turn exerts pressure on the sciatic nerve. So instead of carrying one big package containing lots of items, break it up into two or more smaller portions.

5. Watch your weight: Carrying excess weight puts the entire body under stress. As most of the weight is borne by your legs, the constant pressure can end up triggering Sciatica. Thus, you should carefully maintain your weight with diet control and regular exercise.

6. Stop smoking: While the impact of smoking on lung health is well known, few people know that tobacco increases the risk of inflammation and pain. If you want to avoid Sciatica, then stop smoking without further delay.

The Link Between Rheumatoid Arthritis And Heart Disease

People with Rheumatoid Arthritis lead a painful life. This kind of arthritis arises from adverse autoimmune reaction where the immune system attacks and destroys healthy tissue of the body, thinking that it is fighting an infection. This leads to chronic pain, swelling, redness and gradual loss of function in the affected joint. The inflammation which causes Rheumatoid Arthritis can spread to other organs, further damaging your health.

Now research has found that people who suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis are at an increased risk of having heart disease

The study

In an article published in the journal Arthritis Research and Therapy, researchers observed more than 400 people who had been suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis for about 5 years. Researchers carefully monitored disease progression, treatments taken, medicines prescribed and common risk factors of degraded heart health such as cholesterol level, blood pressure and blood sugar balance.

After an extended period of observation, researchers discovered that people with abnormal levels of chronic inflammation had noticeable drop in heart health and heightened risk of heart trouble.

But why?

While researchers said that more study was needed to explain the link between Rheumatoid Arthritis and impaired heart health, they reported that the aggressive autoimmune reaction is perhaps the most important culprit. This means that a proper treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis cannot ignore the damage done by inflammation to vital organs like the heart. This study can be seen as a warning sign for medical professionals not to focus too excessively on just the affected joint and instead help the patient take necessary steps to safeguard heart health and general well-being.

How to ensure heart health

1. Get regular exercise: Perform moderate aerobic activities like walking, jogging or swimming at least thrice a week. You can also try out stretching exercises in order to limber up the affected joints before starting your day. This will improve blood circulation to the diseased joints and may even reduce the sensation of pain.

2. Monitor your diet: What you eat can have enormous influence on your health, especially that of your heart. If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, you need to eat anti-inflammatory foods like carrots, spinach, walnuts, oranges and bell peppers. This will help you stay fit and speed up the recovery process.

3. Take adequate rest: People with Rheumatoid Arthritis are known to feel tired. When you feel like this, then stop your activities and take a short 30-minute nap. You will wake up refreshed and reinvigorated. This will also temporarily reduce the workload of your heart muscles.

4. Avoid obesity: This is a particularly common risk factor for heart disease. The more excess fat you carry, the worse will your heart health become. You should talk to a nutritionist about your anxieties regarding obesity and follow the dietary recommendations.

5. Stay away from bad habits: Injurious activities like smoking or drinking alcohol can be enormously damaging to your health in the long run. Such bad habits help to intensify inflammation, which in turn endangers the affected joint as well as important organs like the heart. People with Rheumatoid Arthritis should stay away from such things as much as possible.

Everyday Tips For Ankylosing Spondylitis

If you are suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), then you are well aware just how grave a problem it is. Even simple everyday tasks can become almost impossible to accomplish. The chronic pain and stiffness can take a heavy toll on even the most resolute and determined amongst us.

However, there is no need for despair. With the help of some simple tips and guidelines, you will be able to maintain a moderately active live. More importantly, you will be able to manage the uncomfortable symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis and slow down the process of inflammation.

Ankylosing Spondylitis – what to do

1. Eat a healthy diet: Try to include plenty of fresh fruits, green vegetables and lean meat in your diet. This will help reduce the extent of the autoimmune inflammation and decrease pain. Eating properly and avoiding junk food is essential in maintaining a healthy weight, which in turn will keep you safe from obesity and its associated complications.

2. Maintain proper posture: People with AS tend to have great difficulty in standing straight. In order to reduce the pain, they may even adopt a slouching posture. This is actually a harmful posture to adopt. The more you slouch, the more stress your spine experiences. Thus, train yourself to sit and stand straight as much as possible to reduce strain on the spine and avoid general discomfort.

3. Get massage: Careful massage on your back may help reduce the pain sensation temporarily. Massage increases blood circulation around the spine and allows the back muscles to relax. Make sure you get massage from a trained masseur and remember to inform him that you are suffering from AS. This will help the masseur calibrate the massage session to suit your needs.

4. Follow your doctor’s instruction: AS is the result of an adverse autoimmune reaction, due to which your immune system starts to attack healthy tissue. In such a grave situation, you need to follow your doctor’s advice. Take the prescribed medicines on time. If you have been suggested some kind of physiotherapy, then start taking them without any delay.

5. Be patient: No medication in the world has an instant effect. Moreover, the same medicine works slightly differently for different people. So you must exercise patience with your medication regimen. Treat medicines as a way of helping yourself become healthy again and not a boring chore. This way, you won’t feel the need to seek instant results and thus avoid unnecessary stress.

What to avoid

1. Don’t take too much rest: The pain and stiffness may at times force you to take rest. While you do need to take rest, you must also make sure that you don’t become a couch potato. Try to get moderate exercise at least thrice a week. Take up exercises which increase strength and flexibility of your back and neck. Avoid doing exercise near bed time as it may disturb your sleep rhythm.

2. Stay away from alcohol: Drinking alcohol may help to reduce the pain sensation for a few hours. But alcohol is known to interfere with AS medication. This can slow down the recovery process and can lead to unseemly complications.

3. Avoid gaining weight: Watch how much and at what time you eat. Try to avoid gaining weight as this will add more stress on your spine and worsen pain sensation.

4. Refrain from fad diets: There are many articles and books on ‘Diet for Arthritis’ which declare that they will help you manage pain and stiffness. Many of these are not effective and some can actually make AS worse. So try to stay clear of such exotic diets.

5. Cut down on red meat: Try not to eat red meat more than twice a week. This will help keep your weight in check. Moreover, eating red meat regularly is known to increase the intensity of inflammation. As a substitute, you can try eating oily fish like sardines and anchovies. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce inflammation.

Ankylosing Spondylitis – What Makes It A Serious Problem?

The dreaded faces of Arthritis are many – one of them is Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS).

The problem of AS, unlike other kinds of Arthritis, is not widespread. About 0.1% people in the world are affected by AS, with men being in the majority. But just like other manifestations of Arthritis, AS can create severe problems in your ability to work or take part in leisurely activities. In many cases, it can leave you permanently disfigured.

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

It is a condition primarily affecting the spinal column which is caused by long-term inflammation, resulting from adverse autoimmune reaction. In some cases, the inflammation can spread to the hips or even the shoulders. While more research is required on the exact cause of AS, medical experts point to genetic and environmental factors which trigger this problem.

Identifying Ankylosing Spondylitis

Just as in other kinds of Arthritis, the symptoms of AS are at first so mild that they may pass unnoticed. The primary signs of AS are:

• Constant pain and stiffness in the back, hips or buttocks
• Inflammation of the ligaments and tendons around the spine
• Fused bones in the spinal column, hips or neck
• Inability to stand straight
• Difficulty in expanding the chest and taking deep breaths
• Chronic fatigue and exhaustion
• Redness and pain in the eyes
• Loss of appetite

What causes Ankylosing Spondylitis?

While it is the autoimmune inflammation which does most of the damage, researchers are not entirely sure why the immune system attacks healthy cells. There is strong genetic link to AS: most people suffering from it carry one particular gene called HLA – B27. However, some people have this gene and yet do not suffer from AS. At this stage, all that can be said is that right now, there are more questions than answers surrounding the problem of Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Who are at risk?

1. Having family member with AS: If you have people who suffer from AS in your family, then you have a high risk of suffering from AS in the near future. If your family history includes people with Spondyloarthritis (a group of diseases which includes AS and Psoriatic Arthritis) then the risk of AS also increases.

2. Testing positive for HLA-B27: Decades of research has shown that there is an intimate connection between the gene HLA-B27 and the incidence of AS. This particular genetic marker is found in about 90% of AS patients.

3. Chronic gastrointestinal problems: Having stomach problems from infections caused by salmonella, shigella or campylobacter increase the risk of AS.

What you can do

If you think that you have two or more symptoms associated with AS, then you need to calm down first. Yes, AS is a major condition, and there is no comprehensive cure for it – however, it can be treated and kept under control. Without further delay, you should visit a joint pain treatment clinic and consult the doctors. With the correct medication, physiotherapy, appropriate exercise and diet control, you too can get a grip on Ankylosing Spondylitis and continue to lead a pain free as well as active life.

Beat Arthritis Pain This Winter - 7 Simple Tips

Many people who suffer from Arthritis dread the coming of winter. This is not merely an unreasonable phobia, there exists research which says that pain perception is adversely affected by changes in weather, especially, temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure. While more study is required, this finding fits in perfectly with the spike in complaints regarding joint pain that doctors face from their Arthritis patients during winter or monsoon.

Although you can do nothing about the chilly weather, you can take precautions which will help you reduce the sensation of pain brought about by seasonal changes. These tips will not solve the underlying problem of Arthritis, but they can certainly make life less unpleasant and transform the winter season into a time of joy.

Combating Arthritis pain in winter

1. Wear warm clothes: As it is chilly outside, you need to wear adequate warm clothes. Take care to cover affected joints like the knees or the hands so that they are least exposed to the cold weather. Since Arthritis usually affects the elderly, you should make sure that they are properly clothed most of the time. If necessary, convince them to wear layers of warm clothes which can keep them shielded from shifts in temperature.

2. Drink plenty of water: In the experience of some doctors, people who drink enough water throughout the day tend to have less experience of pain. Perhaps, mild dehydration might make some people more sensitive to pain. So remember to drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday.

3. Exercise regularly: This will help control your weight and improve the flexibility and strength of your bones and muscles. This will add much needed strength to your joints. Just 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 4 times a week is enough to maintain joint health and bring down the risk of joint pain.

4. Be active in the house: While you may feel like avoiding any work in the chilly weather, this is actually a bad idea. Doctors and physiotherapists around the world ask Arthritis patients to try and stay active as much as possible. Since the weather outside may not suit you, try to stay active in the house. Doing household chores like cooking or doing the laundry is a great way of staying active in spite of the inclement weather.

5. Apply hot pack: If you feel that the pain is getting unbearable, then apply a hot pack on the affected area. The warmth will improve blood circulation in and around the joint while temporarily reducing pain sensation.

6. Lose weight: Even a reduction of a couple of kilograms can help reduce the stress on the affected joints (especially the knees) which will in turn reduce the sensation of pain. Losing just 5 kilograms will help reinvigorate your body and make it easier to perform daily tasks.

7. Don’t ignore good food: Make sure you get plenty of calcium and vitamin D-rich foods on a daily basis. Both of these nutrients are vital for maintaining bone strength. So eat dairy products like milk or yogurt everyday.

5 Effective Ways To Prevent Muscle Cramps

Muscle cramps are incredibly common. There is hardly anyone amongst us who hasn’t suffered from a painful cramp at least once. And yet, for most people they are a mystery. Why do muscle cramps occur? And what can you do to prevent them? Let’s try to answer these questions today!

What causes muscle cramps?

Your muscle cramps are an indication that all is not well in your body. The most common causes of muscle cramps are dehydration and mineral imbalance. In some cases, it is a sign of kidney disease. Cramps can also be caused by excessive physical activity or keeping a group of muscles in an awkward position for too long. Researchers have found that certain medication such as diuretics can also trigger muscle cramps.

How to prevent muscle cramps

1. Drink plenty of water: No matter what your level of activity may be, try to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. If you are required to undertake physically intensive tasks, then carry a bottle of water with you at all times. Remember, lack of adequate water is the most common reason for muscle cramps. So try to avoid dehydration at all costs.

2. Watch your minerals: Minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium and sodium are essential in regulating the contraction and relaxation cycle of the muscles. If the balance among these minerals is threatened, you may end up suffering from muscle cramps. So, include bananas, mangoes, yogurt, carrots, spinach, beans and nuts on a regular basis.

3. Include protein in your diet: Your muscles need protein in order to repair damage and maintain muscle growth. In the absence of adequate protein, your muscles may become weak and prone to cramping. Therefore, you should eat lean meat like chicken regularly. For vegetarians, lentils or dal is an excellent source of plant protein.

4. Do stretching exercises: These exercises, if done correctly, help the muscles to remain flexible and strong, thus reducing the risk of suffering from muscle cramps. Make sure you get at least 30 minutes of simple stretching exercises at least 4 times a week.

5. Take adequate rest: Overstraining yourself serves no purpose. If you take part in regular exercise or play sports, then remember to take rest after a period of intense activity. This will give your major muscle group time to relax and conduct repairs caused by everyday wear-and-tear. For every hour of high-intensity activity, take at least 15 minutes of rest.
