Learn How To Manage Heel Pain (Plantar fasciitis)

Komal is in great pain. Every step she takes brings a fresh wave of pain from her left heel. All she wants to do is to go home and take rest. But what about the meeting with the new clients? And the project that is due tomorrow? Komal clenched her teeth to control the pain. It’s just heel pain, she thought. It will go away on its own.

Sadly, such an attitude towards heel pain is quite common. People are just not ready to take heel pain seriously. Heel pain usually arises from Plantar fasciitis, which is a foot condition when a band of tissue at the sole of the feet becomes inflamed.

The pain of plantar fasciitis can be so bad that it hurts to walk, much less exercise or do daily activities. But a few simple changes and precautions at home can help reduce the pain in your heels.

Tips for home
  • Use an ice pack to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid walking on uneven surfaces.
  • Rest your feet by using them as less as possible.

In order to make sure that you are providing the maximum care possible for your heel, you can do the following:
  • Wear special splints at night.
  • Undergo physical therapy.
  • Use custom-made shoes.

Exercise for Heel Pain

You may be able to relieve heel pain by stretching tight calf muscles.
  • Stand about 1 ft from a wall and place the palms of both hands against the wall at chest level.
  • Step back with one foot, keeping that leg straight at the knee, and both feet flat on the floor.
  • Bend your front leg at the knee, and press the wall with both hands until you feel a gentle stretch on your back leg.
  • Hold the position and count for 10 and then switch to the other leg.

Preventing Heel pain
  • Lose weight if you struggle with heel pain often.
  • Buy shoes which are sturdy enough to support your feet.
  • Don’t wear worn-out shoes.
  • Don’t walk barefoot on hard surfaces.
  • If you go running regularly, buy good-quality cushioned shoes which give support to your feet.

Meditate And Regulate Low Back Pain

Can meditation help in managing low back pain? Ramesh thought about the advice his boss gave him regarding his back problem. Meditation can work wonders on the pain, Ramesh had heard. He had been suffering from low back pain for the past 3 months. The medicine seemed to work for a while but the pain always returned. What about meditation? Ramesh was simply not ready to take up meditation right now.
A recent study (published in the Journal of the American Medical Association) found that meditation based stress reduction technique performed better than standard care in treating low back pain

The study

The researchers observed 342 adults with persistent low back pain. None of the study participants had a clear cause for the pain. The researchers assigned some of the participants into a group with mindfulness therapy led by an instructor.

The form of meditation used in the study was based on mindfulness and combined with simple yoga poses in a group environment. The participants of the study were asked to focus on body sensations, thoughts and emotion without actively trying to change or control them.

The findings

After six months, the people in the meditation group showed gradual improvement in their condition. They were able to do daily tasks (such as doing the laundry or climbing the stairs) with greater ease.
Meditation can work alongside standard treatment in the fight against back pain. The study clearly shows that there may be value in offering people approaches that focus on the mind.

Other health benefits of meditation

  • Helps to control high blood pressure
  • Reduces anxiety attacks
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Increases emotional stability
  • Imparts greater clarity of mind
  • Improves focus by reducing stress
  • Lowers the impact of negative emotions like anger and hate

How Does Calcium Help Your Bones Stay Fit?

Get more calcium!” This is what we hear from our relatives as well as our doctors. More calcium is said to prevent bone fractures and help strengthen the bones. Even the Institute of Medicine advises people to take at least 1000 milligrams of calcium every day.

A new study, published in the British Medical Journal, has now found out the exact relation between intake of calcium supplements and the risk of fractures.

After 5 years of research, we now know that there is a dark side to reckless calcium intake. High intake of calcium is associated with increased risk of stroke, kidney stones and even heart attack.

The study

Mark Bolland led a team of researchers who looked at 70 studies on the effect of calcium supplements in preventing fractures. They considered both randomized clinical trials and observational studies. The studies consulted had a wide variety of participants, calcium intake, vitamin D intake and the reporting of fractures.

The findings

The researchers found out that calcium supplements did not have any impact on the risk of bone fractures.

The same research team also reviewed 59 clinical trials which looked at calcium intake and bone health. After taking 1000 mg of calcium supplements, bone density increased by about 0.6% to 1.8% - an amount too low to protect you from fractures.

What should you do?

Now that you know that calcium supplements won’t protect you from fractures, you should look to getting your daily calcium requirement from natural sources. After all, adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is still essential for maintaining bone health. Any deficiency can increase the risk of Osteoporosis and even Rickets.

Natural sources of Calcium
  • Dairy foods like milk, yogurt and cheese
  • Leafy green vegetables like spinach and cabbage
  • Fruits like oranges
  • Beans and peas
  • Salmon and sardines

Can Depression Make Rheumatoid Arthritis Deadlier?

Depression is endemic among people with Rheumatoid Arthritis. People with Arthritis commonly suffer from symptoms like fatigue, pain, loss of focus and feeling of disability. Now, a new study has found out that Depression can actually worsen Arthritis.

The study

Researchers studied 379 people with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Participants were asked about their emotional state. The answers were tabulated against standard scales used to measure whether the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis were improving or not.

What did they find?

The researchers found that the participants reporting more anxiety and depression had higher disease activity scores. Such people also reported more tender joints and, when asked about their symptoms, they themselves rated their disease activity as higher.

This research corroborates with another study of 275 people with Rheumatoid Arthritis. The patients who reported more depressive symptoms also reported more pain and joint tenderness during the study period.

What does this study means for you?

These studies suggest that depression may worsen Rheumatoid Arthritis disease activity and even diminish the benefits of arthritis medications. People with Rheumatoid Arthritis need to be educated about signs of depression and given appropriate resources and treatment as needed. Furthermore, doctors need to account for depressive symptoms when assessing disease activity.

How to deal with Depression?

1. Depression is often accompanied by a critical, self-destructive mentality. When you have cruel thoughts about yourself, try to sideline them by focusing on the positive aspects of your life.

2. Many people who suffer from depression may be masking a feeling of anger. By acknowledging and accepting or discussing your angry feelings, you are much less likely to turn these feelings against yourself or allow them to lead you into a depressed state.

3. It's a physiological fact that activity fights depression. Do light exercise 20 minutes a day, five days a week and you will feel better emotionally.

4. Go to a place where there are people who may have similar interests as you, or even to a public spot like a museum, park, or mall, where you could enjoy being amongst people. Never allow yourself to indulge in the thought that you are different from or less than anyone else.

5. Doing activities that help you calm down and that raise your spirits are important, even simple things like baking brownies, taking a bath, or listening to upbeat music.

6. Feeling embarrassed over your depression will only increase your symptoms and discourage you from seeking help. Don't punish yourself for feeling bad.

Neck Pain - Treat It Before It Beats You!

It is the end of the month and Saurav is overwhelmed with work. On top of that he felt a nagging pain in his neck. The pain starts just below his head and stretches down to the shoulder blades. Saurav’s friend suggested that he should see a doctor soon. But Saurav just did not have the time to take a leave. His work is just too important. In spite of the pain, Saurav soldiered on heroically with his work. He felt superior to his colleagues given his indifference to the constant pain.

Sadly, this attitude is fairly common among many people. For them, neck pain is less important than getting work done. Since the problem doesn’t go away when ignored, such people usually face all kinds of complications later in life.

Why neck pain occurs?

  • Car accidents
  • Physical abuse (being punched or shaken)
  • Contact sports that involve tackling or physical contact
  • Cycling accidents
  • Falls, in which the head violently jerks backward
  • Blows to the head with a heavy object
  • Too much time in an awkward position
  • Sleeping in a position that strains the neck

Neck pain complications

  • Chronic neck pain can lead to Cervical Spondylosis.
  • The pain can interfere with the ability to focus on the tasks at hand.
  • Constant feeling of exhaustion.
  • Some people with neck pain experience headache and dizziness.

Managing neck pain

  • Take a warm shower. The heat helps bring nutrient-rich blood flow to the area to stimulate a healing response.
  • Avoid activities such as lifting and sports that make pain and stiffness worse.
  • Do stretching and strengthening exercises to keep your neck flexible and strong while preventing stiffness.
  • Gently massage or rub the area to relieve pain and encourage blood flow. A gentle massage will stimulate blood flow in the area, which helps it to heal.

Good habits for neck pain
  • Practise relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation at least thrice a week.
  • Do low impact aerobic exercises at least twice a week.
  • Stop smoking as the smoke slows down the healing process.

Can exercise help in neck pain?

Flexibility and stretching exercises can expand or preserve the range of motion and elasticity in affected joints, and thus relieve the stiffness that leads to pain. As a general rule, neck stretching is best done every day, and some stretches should be done several times a day.

Specific strengthening exercises will help maintain improved posture, which in turn will lessen or eliminate recurrent flare-ups of pain. As a general rule, neck strengthening exercises should be done every other day to allow muscles time to repair themselves.

Diet for neck pain

1. Omega-3 fatty acids: These acids, found in fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines, can actually lower inflammatory chemicals in your body.

2. Antioxidants and fibre: You should try to have five servings of vegetables every day, and two to four servings of fruit. These foods are high in fiber and anti-inflammatory antioxidants.

3. Calcium: Since neck pain can be caused by wear and tear of the vertebrae in your neck, it makes sense to keep your bones as healthy as possible, so calcium should be an important part of your nutrition plan.

4. Water: Not getting enough fluids into your body can be a cause of muscle pain.

Combat Arthritis With Regular Exercise

Mr. Roshan dislikes exercising. His doctor had suggested light aerobic exercise at least 3 times a week. However, his knees were just too stiff to get anything done. The stiffness along with the intermittent pain struck down even the thought of doing exercise. “Let’s not make things worse,” Mr. Roshan thought, “by doing silly exercises.” His wife, on the other hand, insisted that he should follow the doctor’s advice. This led to many squabbles between the two.

Mr. Roshan’s dilemma is, sadly, quite common. When joint pain strikes, it is human nature to take rest and avoid any strenuous activities. Although this strategy seems to make sense, the latest research says that such a practice is immensely harmful.

According to modern research, exercising a few times every week can ease pain, decrease stiffness, keep the heart strong and the brain while strengthening the muscles.

Is walking enough in fighting arthritis?

While working is a decent exercise for people with arthritis, it is not enough. Doctors nowadays suggest mild strength training to arthritis patients along with swimming or bicycling.

Benefits of exercise

  • Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help weight loss.
  • Regular activity can help you prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns like stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and depression.
  • Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed.
  • Regular exercise helps to maintain your bone strength.
  • By improving balance and coordination, exercise decreases the risk of falling.
  • Exercise strengthens the muscles around the joints. This takes some of the stress off the joints and thus helps to decrease the pain.

Which exercises are ideal?

  • Range-of-motion exercises, which relieve stiffness and increase the ability to move your joints.
  • Strengthening exercises, which help you build strong muscles that support and protect your joints.
  • Aerobic exercises, which improve your cardiovascular health, help control weight and increase you stamina.

Does Sleep Apnea Increase The Risk Of Gout?

Gout is a common inflammatory problem which affects around 8 million people worldwide. Men are usually at greater risk of getting gout. When the uric acid in the blood crystallizes and gets deposited in joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues, an attack of gout ensues.

According to a new study, your risk for gout also increases if you suffer from sleep apnea, a condition where your breathing periodically stops while you are asleep.

The study

In a study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology, researchers combed through records in a health database to compare people with and without sleep apnea. The medical records of 9865 people with sleep apnea were studied.

After one year, people with sleep apnea were about 50% more likely to have had an attack of gout.

But why?

There are two possible explanations for this connection:

Firstly, both conditions have obesity as a risk factor. People who have gout attack are usually overweight. Excess weight is one of the key factors behind a gout attack as well as sleep apnea.

Secondly, sleep apnea leads to hypoxia, a condition in which the lack of adequate oxygen in the blood causes the cells to break down. This leads to an increase in the concentration of uric acid in the body.

What to do?

Will treating sleep apnea help reduce the risk of gout? More research is needed to answer this question. Nonetheless, you should talk to your doctor about this newly discovered connection.

Change your diet and lifestyle

  • Avoid eating red meat and seafood as they can increase uric acid levels.
  • Stay away from drinks with high fructose corn syrup.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Adopt an exercise program to help lose excess weight.
  • Take plenty of vitamin C in the form of oranges and bell peppers.

Confront Osteoporosis With Soy Protein

While driving home from the office, Ramesh thought about what his boss said. “Make sure your mother eats soybeans daily”, the boss said. She was 67 years old and was recently diagnosed with
Osteoporosis. Doctors had given her a whole list of medicines to take. But Ramesh was not convinced. He believed that above all, healthy food is necessary to fight a disease.

But which food? Different people and websites gave contradictory suggestions. Now there is soybean. Yes it has lots of soy protein. But will it do any good? Or is it just a myth?

A recent study

Researchers at the University of Hull studied 200 people by giving them different quantities of soy protein. Then their bone health was checked by examining certain signs or markers.

The findings

They found that the rate of bone loss in people on the soy diet was reduced significantly. Such participants also showed less risk of getting heart disease.

The result

Soy protein is a safe and effective way of improving bone health. Soy protein appears to mimic the effect of conventional osteoporosis drugs. Supplementing your diet with soybeans could lead to a significant decrease in the impact of osteoporosis.

How The Weather Affects Arthritis

Rakesh loves snow. He still remembers his first encounter with snow in Sikkim, when he was just 5 years old. After planning for about a month, he had made up his mind. This year they are all going to Gangtok. But when his father heard the news, he felt uncertain. Somehow, cold weather always makes his knee pain worse. The stiffness becomes so great that he cannot even walk. Will he survive the trip? He talked to Rakesh but could not change his mind. “How could weather affect the knees?”, Rakesh thought, “Surely my father is just imagining things!”

If you have arthritis, you may have noticed that the weather affects your symptoms. But is there really a connection or is it just an illusion?

The problem

Past studies examining the effect of rain, humidity, and other weather-related factors on symptoms of arthritis have been inconclusive, and in some cases contradictory. We still don’t know whether it is one particular feature of the weather or a combination of features that matters. There are many potential factors — humidity, temperature, precipitation, barometric pressure etc.

The new studies

Dutch researchers enrolled 222 people with osteoarthritis. The perception of pain and stiffness was mapped upon the weather conditions. In another study, 600 arthritis patients were observed for a period of one year.

The findings

Both studies found that there was some correlation between weather conditions and the arthritis
symptoms. Higher humidity and atmospheric pressure were linked with increased perception of pain and stiffness. Researchers aren’t sure why this happens. They suspect certain atmospheric conditions increase swelling in the joint capsule.

Arthritis precautions

  • Extra weight puts more pressure on your joints. So losing excess body weight will reduce the stress on your joints.
  • Indulge in regular exercise as it can help you manage your weight as well as improve joint movement.
  • Use hot or cold packs when you feel that the pain is getting worse.
  • Meditation and relaxation techniques may be able to help you reduce pain.
  • Take adequate turmeric as the curcumin in it can help control pain.
  • Eat fatty fish like mackerel, sardines, salmon or tuna at least twice a week. These fishes are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which may help to reduce the perception of pain in arthritis.

Let Exercise Rejuvenate Your Skin

Everyone knows that exercise is essential for a healthy body. But did you know that it can breathe new life into your dull skin? Yes, working out helps you maintain your figure and your skin. Exercise is one of the best ways of caring for your skin.

Let’s see how exercise can help you get beautiful and clear skin.

1. Instant glow: When you exercise, you are supplying your skin with a rich dose of richly-oxygenated blood. Your skin gets more than the usual share of oxygen and nutrients. Regular exercise, thus, leads to healthy and glowing skin.

2. Reduced wrinkles: Working out helps to reduce the concentration of cortisol in your body. Cortisol is a known stress hormone which increases sebum production in the skin which in turn leads to greater acne. Cortisol can also damage the delicate collagen in your skin and thus contributes to wrinkle-formation. Exercise actually supports the production of collagen and helps your skin to be supple, elastic and firm.

3. Acne reduction: Regular exercise helps to draw out the traces of toxins from the skin, thus adding a new life to your skin. Just remember not to exercise while wearing make up. Keep fragrance-free cleansing wipes in your bag when you go to the gym and wear fabric that absorbs perspiration from your skin.

4. Healthy hair: Your hair is integral to your beauty. Regular exercise keeps your hair strong and healthy. During exercise, more blood flows to the hair follicles and promotes hair growth. Since exercise lowers stress, it means your hair is less likely to become brittle and fall out.

What your exercise routine should be

1. Avoid exercising outside during peak sun time, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

2. Wear loose-fitting workout clothes.

3. While all forms of exercise are good for your skin, it is better if you mix your workout routine with different types of exercises.

4. Try not to become trapped in your routine. Keep it interesting as well as challenging. You will be motivated to obey a routine which challenges you as an individual.

5.  Try adding at least 30 minutes of yoga or meditation to your routine.

6. If you cannot go to the gym, just go out for a brisk walk when you get the time.  Very soon, you will notice a new glow and firmness in your skin.

How To Plan Your Arthritis Diet?

For several years, researchers have been suggesting that your diet has an enormous influence on your arthritis. Certain foods can help ease the stiffness and pain while others can aggravate inflammation. While researchers are still looking for answers, we now know a lot about the foods which will help us contain arthritis.

If you have arthritis, you need to plan your diet. Eating the wrong kinds of food can needlessly complicate your delicate condition. Here you will find 6 simple strategies from eminent rheumatologists which will help you build the perfect diet for arthritis.

1. Skip refined sugars: Stay away from foods which contain refined sugars like high fructose corn syrup and sucrose. Usually, sweetmeats and junk food have large amounts of refined sugars. Cutting back on sugars can help ease some of the symptoms of arthritis.

2. Avoid foods which affect your symptoms: If you feel that a particular food is increasing the symptoms, then avoid it altogether. It does not matter how delicious or nutritious it may be. Many people complain of increased pain after eating pizza. This happens because pizza contains trans fat, which contributes to inflammation.

3. Take fish oil: Several studies have found that fish oil has a positive impact on the recurrent symptoms of arthritis. Fish oil has omega-3 fatty acids which work to reduce the intensity of the inflammation in arthritis. Salmon, mackerel and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acid.

4. Eat fruits, whole grains and fatty fish: If you have arthritis, a daily diet of fruits and vegetables along with fish can be enormously beneficial. While some experts will tell you to avoid meat completely, it won’t be a problem if you eat a little white meat twice a month.

5. Protect your heart: Rheumatologists advise people to eat food which is healthy for their heart. People with arthritis are at a higher risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases. Remember to eat foods which strengthen your heart and helps to control cholesterol.

6. Include Ginger: Gingerol present in ginger gives it its anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger helps to reduce the action of T cells which in turn reduces systemic inflammation.

7. Avoid alcohol: Alcohol makes it difficult for your body to absorb anti-arthritis medications. This will only make the symptoms worse.

8. Keep Chilli peppers: All chilli peppers contain natural compounds called capsaicinoids. This gives them their anti-inflammatory properties.

9. Eat plenty of nuts: Nuts like walnuts, pistachios and almonds are rich in monounsaturated fat which helps to slow down inflammation in the joints. Don’t eat more than a handful of nuts per day.

10. Have turmeric: It helps to reduce pain, inflammation and stiffness related to rheumatoid arthritis as well as osteoarthritis.

Diet is not a chore. While we are talking about “plans” and “strategies”, don’t let your diet become a boring chess game versus disease and disability. You must prevent your diet from becoming just another hardship in your life. You will be motivated to be faithful to a diet plan which is interesting. There will also be less chance of being tempted by unhealthy but tongue-tingling food.

Is Calcium Beneficial For The Elderly?

Take calcium when you get old – this is a piece of common knowledge. Millions of ordinary men and women buy calcium supplement to give to their ageing parents. They believe that the calcium will help their parents retain the strength in their bones. Taking calcium supplements has become a part of ancestral wisdom.

But how correct is this “fact”?

The research

New Zealand researchers analyzed more than 100 previous investigations. They gathered all the clinical studies of calcium supplements and dietary calcium intake for both bone density and fractures.

What did they find? This provides concrete evidence that taking calcium supplements will not be beneficial for the elderly. Moreover, consumption of excess calcium can actually be harmful for the body.

Is there support for the conclusion?

The researchers pointed out two reviews which corroborate their finding: one review compared two set of patients who consumed different amounts of calcium. The other review looked at 44 previous studies on how calcium supplements affect the risk of fracture. In both studies, no evidence could be found for the benefit of taking calcium regularly.

The findings will surprise clinicians and patients. They have received very strong messages for countless years about the importance of calcium for bone health in guidelines for Osteoporosis management.

The danger of calcium

  • Calcium supplements often cause minor gastrointestinal side effects such as constipation
  • It also contributes to the risk of getting kidney stones and heart attacks
  • Too much calcium can lead to more hip fractures
  • Taking more than the daily requirement of calcium increases the risk of cardiovascular disease

This research suggests that instead of taking calcium supplements at the very outset, it is necessary to find out whether the elderly need the supplement at all. This can be done by looking for the level of calcium insufficiency in them. Such information will be a better guide to think twice before taking calcium supplements on their own.

Foods Which Affect Bone Density

Do you think all natural foods are healthy for you? People in general think that nature’s bounty is designed to help them become healthy. They unthinkingly try to follow a natural diet in order to help their ailing bodies. They are sure that they are on the path to health and happiness.

But are they always correct?

It is a myth that what is natural is necessarily good for us. After all, there are a number of severely poisonous berries, fruits and plants that can be found in forests. Does this apply to your “natural” diet as well?

If you think all foods are good for your bones, then you are wrong. Certain foods and elements in your carefully planned diet can actually lower bone density, rendering you prone to diseases like Arthritis and Osteoporosis.

While some natural foods are indeed healthy, excess consumption can cause more harm than good. Today, let’s find out how some foods are potentially harmful for your bones:

1. Protein: You need protein to build strong bones, but when you eat too much protein, your body produces chemicals called sulfates that can remove calcium from the bones. Animal protein (rather than vegetable protein) is more likely to cause such an effect.

2. Vitamin A: Although vitamin A is necessary for bone growth, too much of the retinol form of vitamin A interferes with vitamin D absorption, which in turn causes bone loss.

3. Sodium: Too much sodium in your diet can cause you to excrete calcium in your urine and perspiration, thus leading to weaker bones.

4. Oxalates: It a kind of salt found in some foods. It can prevent you from absorbing calcium if it is in the same food along with calcium. This salt is usually found in spinach and in nuts like cashew.

5. Wheat bran: It also reduces the rate of absorption of calcium in the body.

6. Alcohol: The absorption of vitamin D and calcium in the bones is severely affected by drinking alcohol regularly.

7. Sugar: Excess sugar inhibits calcium absorption and depletes phosphorus, a mineral important in facilitating the absorption of calcium.

8. Cola: Drinking seven or more colas per week is associated with a reduction in bone mineral density.

9. Caffeine: Caffeine leaches calcium from bones, sapping their strength. Roughly 6 milligrams of calcium is lost for every 100 milligrams of caffeine you drink.

10. Tomato: Nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes can cause bone inflammation and osteoporosis.

Fibromyalgia Leads To Decrease In Brain Function

Mr. Sharma is never sure why his neck aches all the time. It was in late 2014 that the pain started. He applied some cold packs and the pain went away for a few hours. But then it always returned. Recently the pain increased after a minor car accident. He took the required medication but the pain remained. Was the doctor wrong or was it all in his head?

This could be the effect of Fibromyalgia.

No one knows why Fibromyalgia occurs. It is a common and a chronic disease that mostly strikes in the middle age. While men and children can have it, the vast majority of people with Fibromyalgia are women. Fibromyalgia affects nearly 5 million people.

Sufferers typically have fatigue with long-term pain in several areas of the body, along with tenderness in soft tissues such as the muscles, joints and tendons.

The latest research

In a study published in the journal Brain Connectivity, researchers took fMRI scans of 22 healthy
women and compared the images to that of 16 female Fibromyalgia patients. The day before the scans, the women completed tests to calibrate their pain sensitivity. A computer-controlled pressure stimulator applied pressure to their left thumb, while they rated the sensitivity.

The result

When the researchers analyzed the brain scans, they found differences in brain patterns between the healthy participants and those with Fibromyalgia. The Fibromyalgia participants showed "functional decoupling" between areas of the brain that process pain signals. The authors suggest this reduction in brain connectivity could impair pain perception.
