In a recent study published in the journal Human
Brain Mapping, researchers at
the Northwestern University have
found that there is a deep connection between smoking and back pain. Smokers
are more likely to develop chronic back pain. The researchers also found that
people who stop smoking reduce the risk of getting back pain.
The study
Researchers studied 160 people with back pain. At
various stages of the study, the people underwent MRI brain scans. They were
also asked to rate the level of back pain they feel in their daily lives. Then
they were asked to fill a questionnaire about their smoking habit along with
other health issues.
Scientists then analyzed the MRI activity between
two specific areas of the brain, the nucleus accumbens and the medial
prefrontal cortex. Both these areas of the brain are crucial in the development
of addiction.
The findings
The researchers discovered that the strength of the connection between these two areas of the brain determined the risk of getting back pain. In people who smoke regularly, the connection was found to be stronger compared to the brain of non-smokers. However, when they stopped smoking, the risk of developing back pain also decreased.
Smoking and Chronic pain
- Increased sensitivity to pain: Many studies have found that smokers are more sensitive to pain than non-smokers. Regular tobacco consumption changes the level of sensitivity of the nerve cells.
- Smoking and back pain: Smoking is harmful for the body. While it does not directly cause pain, it creates conditions where pain can flourish. Smoking contributes to back pain by intensifying Osteoporosis and deterioration of the Spinal disc.
- Interference with pain medication: The medicine smokers take for pain is far less effective than it is for non-smokers. Thus, smokers need to take larger doses of the same medicine in order to subdue back pain.
How
to quit smoking – some suggestions
1. Choose
when to quit: Pick a day when you are going to give up
smoking for the rest of your life. Don’t
choose a day that is too near or too far.
2. Ask
your family members for help: Tell them that you have
chosen to give up smoking. There is no doubt that they will support you and
your decision. Warn them that you may be grumpy sometimes due to the lack of cigarettes.
3. Prepare
yourself for the big day: Search and remove any item in the
house that is connected to smoking. Think about any activity that you do, which
increases the craving for cigarettes and try to avoid it.
4. Get
nicotine patches: Nicotine patches and gums can help
smokers resist the urge to smoke. Talk to your doctor about which product is
best suited for you.
5. Join
a support group: Since there are lots of people who also
want to quit smoking, you will find adequate company in your journey away from
smoking. Interacting with a group of people who have the same problem can
improve your spirits and provide you with much needed advice and inner
strength.
