4 Sciatica Triggering Factors You Didn’t Know

Sciatica is a problem affecting the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the buttocks and down both legs. When the bones or muscle structure surrounding the nerve begin to put pressure on it, this produces irritation. This can lead to chronic pain and severe discomfort.

Symptoms of Sciatica

· Constant pain on one side of the buttock or leg
· Burning or tingling sensation
· Weakness and numbness in the leg
· Difficulty in walking or standing
· Radiating pain down the leg

Most people think that it takes some kind of traumatic injury to trigger Sciatica. However, certain factors which seem harmless can end up triggering Sciatic pain. Today, let’s talk about 4 such things which can drastically increase your risk of suffering from this problem.

Triggering factors for Sciatica

1. Keeping things in back pocket: A pocket is where you keep things – what’s this got to do with Sciatica? Actually, keeping things in the back pocket gradually puts pressure on the buttock and the back of the thighs, which in turn irritates the sciatic nerve beneath the muscles. The damage is greatly worsened when sitting with things like a fat wallet in the back pocket.

2. Wearing tight clothes: Wearing tight-fitting trousers and underpants can end up causing sciatic pain. The tight fit restricts movement and puts pressure on the nerves underlying the skin and muscles. Such clothing also restricts blood circulation especially while sitting.

3. Using high-heeled shoes: Wearing high heels pushes the entire body weight to the front of the foot, where there is less support. Wearing such shoes regularly can build up strain on the thighs, which in turn puts the hamstrings and sciatic nerve under stress.

4. Being overweight: The latest research has confirmed a suspicion that doctors had for years: people with excess body weight are at heightened risk of having Sciatica. The excess weight puts stress on the spine which in future can irritate the sciatic nerve, triggering pain and the recognizable tingling sensation.

Sciatica is serious

If left untreated, sciatic pain can severely disrupt your life. Sciatica can make it difficult to stand or walk or sit. You need to visit a specialized clinic without delay if you observe any of the standard symptoms. Nonetheless, the simplest way to keep sciatic pain at bay is to avoid the above-mentioned issues and follow expert advice.

Knee Osteoarthritis – Watch Out For These Early Warning Signs!

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, primarily affecting people of old age. This problem commonly impacts the knees as this joint is frequently used and is required to bear most of the body weight.

Why does Osteoarthritis occur?

Osteoarthritis happens when the cartilage cushion between the bones in a joint begins to break down and wear out, causing the bones to grind against each other. This lack of cushioning causes chronic pain and stiffness. Given these facts, it becomes apparent that repetitive activities and daily stress may create the conditions for Osteoarthritis to flourish. If left untreated, Osteoarthritis can lead to loss of mobility in the knee and even complete disability.

However, early treatment of Osteoarthritis can help resolve this issue. For this to take place, you need to understand the early warning signs of this problem and seek treatment in due time.

Early warning signs of Osteoarthritis

1. Knee pain: The problem of Osteoarthritis produces chronic pain in the affected joint. The sensation of pain can be accompanied by tenderness in and around the joint. The pain may increase during motion or bending the knee. The tenderness can make you feel uncomfortable about putting pressure on the joint. As the problem progresses, the tenderness can develop into a swelling.

2. Stiffness: Along with the joint pain is stiffness. This sign may be most intense after waking up in the morning. The knee feels especially stiff after spending a few hours sitting continuously. This is a clear sign that the knee joint is becoming degenerated.

3. Abnormal sensation: One of the early signs of Osteoarthritis is breakdown of cartilage tissue. This leads to the bones of the joint come into contact with each other, thus producing uncomfortable grating sensation in the knee while walking.

4. Reduced flexibility: People in the early stages of Osteoarthritis may feel that their knee is no longer as flexible as it used to be. The chronic pain and stiffness is the primary cause behind the loss of flexibility. This may induce some people to not use the knee as often as they would like to.

5. Clicking sound: As the joint structure in the affected knee degenerates, it can cause clicking or cracking sound while moving the knee. This is an indication that the problem is steadily getting worse and thus requires immediate medical attention.

Do You Have Back Pain? Bad Posture Might Be The Reason!

Remember when your mother used to tell you to “sit up straight”? These three simple words summarise a vast body of medical literature which says that bad posture is one of the most common triggers for back pain.

If you want to avoid back pain and keep your spine & surrounding muscles strong, then you should try to maintain a good posture as much as possible. If you are confused about good posture, then read on!

How to get better posture

1. Avoid slouching: This is a common bad habit, which puts stress on the entire spine as well as the supporting muscles and ligaments. It can end up causing back pain in the near future. A slouching posture also interferes with your lungs and digestive organs. Cut down on this habit at once if you care about your back.

2. Stand straight: A simple way to prevent posture-induced problems is to try and stand straight as much as possible. Stand against a wall. Keep your shoulders back and the knees straight. Tuck your belly in. Remember this posture and try to maintain it throughout the day.

3. Sit correctly: After sitting for a while, you may feel the desire to slouch or lean back. However, this is actually putting pressure on your spine. Try to sit with your back resting on the back-rest. Keep a small rolled up towel at the lower back to support the lower section of the spine. Keep your knees level with the hips and your arms close to your ribs.

4. Text carefully: People who send and receive messages on the phone tend to suffer from something called “text neck”. Constantly looking downwards puts strain on the upper section of the spine and neck. Instead, keep your phone level with your face and move your eyes to read or write messages.

5. Wear proper shoes: High heels can be attractive, but wearing them every day for several hours at a stretch puts strain on your back. Moreover, flat soles or platform heels can hurt your feet, and gradually lead to lower back pain. Thus, wear shoes which fit your feet comfortably and provide adequate support as well as flexibility.

Foot Pain? Avoid These 5 Shoes

A bad pair of shoes is one of the most common reasons for chronic foot pain. Most physiotherapists warn people to be careful about the shoes they wear. Wearing shoes which do not provide support and protection to the feet can lead to foot pain as well as problems in the legs, hips and lower back. Thus, bad shoes can mess up your attire as well as wreck your feet!

Which shoes to avoid?

1. Sandals: Also known as “slippers” or “flip-flops”, this footwear is mostly worn at home. While they provide much comfort for the toes, they can also end up causing foot pain. Since the sole is flat, sandals do not provide any support to the bottom of the feet, which can lead to problems like Plantar Fasciitis.

2. High-heeled shoes: Yes, we all know that high heels are attractive. However, the stylish look comes at a grave price. Wearing them shifts the body weight to the front of the foot, which leads to formation of bunions. Moreover, the awkward stance puts stress on the Achilles tendon, which may trigger foot pain in the future.

3. Ballet flats: They are indeed simple to wear and look elegant, but they provide little or no support to the feet. This means that your entire foot is under pressure as long as you keep wearing flats. Over time, this can cause chronic foot pain.

4. Platform shoes: While they are far better compared to high heels, the raised stance increases the risk of rolling your ankles and taking a tumble. The increased height may tempt some women to try out platform shoes, however they should tread carefully so as not to strain their ankles.

5. Pointy shoes: Shoes with pointed toes greatly reduce space for the toes and squeeze together the entire front of your feet. Wearing such shoes regularly can cause nerve pain, bunions, blisters and even hammertoes. The feet can also develop bruises due to the constant pressure.

Which shoes should you wear?

You are probably wondering: now what? What should you wear?

The simple answer is to practice restraint: do not wear any one kind of shoe all the time. A couple of hours in high heels are tolerable, just as slippers are good while in the bathroom. If you are looking for shoes to wear for several hours at a stretch, opt for sports shoes or running shoes. They are specifically designed to provide support, comfort and flexibility to your feet. This will help you stay safe from foot pain.
