When it
comes to taking good care of the bones, most people know that they need
adequate calcium. This mineral, after all, is the building block of bones.
However, there is still some mystery regarding the role played by Vitamin D.
What is this nutrient and why is it important for bone health? Let’s find out!
What is Vitamin D?
It is a
fat-soluble nutrient which helps the body absorb important minerals like
calcium, magnesium and zinc. While there are several types of this Vitamin, the
most common variants are Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol).
Why is it important for bones?
· An
adequate supply of Vitamin D is important for maintaining bone density and
strength.
· Lack
of Vitamin D leads to calcium-depleted bone, which increases the risk of
fractures.
· Vitamin
D helps in absorption of calcium from the intestines.
· Regular
intake of calcium along with Vitamin D as part of a well-balanced diet may
reduce the risk of Osteoporosis.
Signs of Vitamin D deficiency
· Feeling
tired or sad all the time
· Chronic
joint pain or backache
· Weakened
muscles
· Reduced
stamina
· Delayed
wound healing
· Gradual
loss of bone density
Top sources of Vitamin D
1. Sunlight: Your skin can produce Vitamin D
when it is exposed to sunlight. Try to get some sunlight early in the morning
for just 20 minutes.
2. Fish: Oily fish like mackerel is rich
in Vitamin D as well as Omega-3 fatty acids, both of which work together to
reduce inflammation in the bones and associated muscles.
3. Milk: It is a popular source of Vitamin
D. 1 glass of fortified milk contains about 100IU of this Vitamin D.
4. Eggs: It is the most convenient way of
getting Vitamin D. Since the Vitamin content is not that high, it would be
unwise to rely solely on eggs.
5. Cod liver oil: The oil derived from the liver of cod fish is an excellent source of vitamin D. Just one teaspoon of cod liver oil will give you enough vitamin D for the day.
