Does Gout Heighten The Risk Of Heart Attack?

People with Gout have a difficult life – this kind of joint problem can cause excruciating pain which can be severely debilitating. Gout is the result of an increased concentration of uric acid in the body, which leads to formation of urate crystals. The big toes are usually the most affected.

Now, researchers at the University of Oxford have found out that people suffering from Gout have an increased risk of getting a heart attack.

The study

In a research paper published in the journal Rheumatology, researchers looked closely at approximately 205,000 Gout patients between the years 1963 and 2011. The researchers used the available data to track the patients’ health in order to find out any possible link between the problem of Gout and the incidence of heart attack.

After close scrutiny of medical records, researchers discovered that people who suffered from Gout were twice as likely to have heart attack or stroke as people without Gout.

But why?

While more research is needed to find out how exactly Gout increases the risk of heart attack, researchers say that the most probable cause is the increased concentration of uric acid in the body. The gradual change in the body’s chemical composition due to Gout tends to have a negative impact on cardiovascular health, thereby heightening the risk of potentially fatal conditions like heart attack and stroke.

What should you do?

This research finding means that tackling the problem of Gout is not merely about fighting uncomfortable symptoms like the pain or stiffness. A proper Gout management system must work to eliminate the problem of Gout from the root.

If you have been suffering from Gout for quite a while, you should talk to your doctor about this new research. He will probably ask you to undergo a couple of tests to determine the condition of your cardiovascular system. You may have to seek consultation from a specialist Gout treatment clinic to get a treatment plan that is tailored to your health condition.

One thing is now absolutely clear, the presence of Gout is an invitation to other grave problems. Treating Gout as simply a chronic joint problem is thus no longer a sufficient course of action.
