The pain
caused by Gout is something you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. For
centuries, this disease had been a source of terror and endless agony for
countless individuals. Thanks to advances in modern science, we now know a lot
about this problem, especially the role played by uric acid. Researchers and
doctors have come up with some simple guidelines to follow if you want to avoid
Gout.
How to prevent Gout
1. Eat
proper food: Certain
foods are known to prevent the onset of Gout by moderating the concentration of
uric acid in the body. To reduce the risk of getting Gout, try to include
potassium-rich foods in your daily diet. Potassium helps the body get rid of
excess uric acid, which in turn maintains the overall uric acid level in the
body. Foods like bananas, baked potatoes, spinach and beans are naturally rich
sources of potassium. Along with such food, eat brown bread as it contains
complex carbohydrates. Fruits like oranges, cherries and grapes have high
concentration of vitamin C, a compound which reduces uric acid level. Eat at
least one orange every day.
2. Manage
your weight:
Obesity is one of the most prominent risk factors of Gout. Find out by how much
you are overweight and try to reach the safe level in a safe and slow manner.
Correct dieting along with regular exercise is your best bet. Avoid crash diets
or ‘magic cures’ for weight loss as they can end up harming your health.
3. Avoid
harmful edibles: Sugary
and junk food raise uric acid level. This increases the risk of crystal
formation which in turn causes joint pain and inflammation. So avoid sweet
items and heavily processed food. Try to avoid meat and fish in your daily
diet. If you really want to eat meat, then go for lean cuts. Control the amount
of fat in your diet by avoiding fatty food like milk. Switch to skimmed milk
instead.
4. Refrain
from alcohol: It
interferes with the body’s ability to process uric acid. This increases the
uric acid level, thus heightening the risk of a Gout attack. So stay away from
anything with alcohol in it.
5. Take
medication on time: Along
with changes to your lifestyle, Gout medication is also needed. You should
visit a specialized clinic and take expert advice. If you feel some discomfort
after taking the prescribed medicines, then talk to your doctor without delay.
Don’t try to change or discontinue the dosage on your own.
