Do You Have Back Pain? Bad Posture Might Be The Reason!

Remember when your mother used to tell you to “sit up straight”? These three simple words summarise a vast body of medical literature which says that bad posture is one of the most common triggers for back pain.

If you want to avoid back pain and keep your spine & surrounding muscles strong, then you should try to maintain a good posture as much as possible. If you are confused about good posture, then read on!

How to get better posture

1. Avoid slouching: This is a common bad habit, which puts stress on the entire spine as well as the supporting muscles and ligaments. It can end up causing back pain in the near future. A slouching posture also interferes with your lungs and digestive organs. Cut down on this habit at once if you care about your back.

2. Stand straight: A simple way to prevent posture-induced problems is to try and stand straight as much as possible. Stand against a wall. Keep your shoulders back and the knees straight. Tuck your belly in. Remember this posture and try to maintain it throughout the day.

3. Sit correctly: After sitting for a while, you may feel the desire to slouch or lean back. However, this is actually putting pressure on your spine. Try to sit with your back resting on the back-rest. Keep a small rolled up towel at the lower back to support the lower section of the spine. Keep your knees level with the hips and your arms close to your ribs.

4. Text carefully: People who send and receive messages on the phone tend to suffer from something called “text neck”. Constantly looking downwards puts strain on the upper section of the spine and neck. Instead, keep your phone level with your face and move your eyes to read or write messages.

5. Wear proper shoes: High heels can be attractive, but wearing them every day for several hours at a stretch puts strain on your back. Moreover, flat soles or platform heels can hurt your feet, and gradually lead to lower back pain. Thus, wear shoes which fit your feet comfortably and provide adequate support as well as flexibility.
