7 Ways Grapes can Boost Your Health!

There are many varieties of grapes: red, green, purple to seedless grapes, not to mention wine and raisins. This popular fruit has been cultivated for the past 8000 years. It was known to be cultivated first in the Middle East. The humble grape is actually a berry. Several million tones of this berry are grown in the world each year, with most of them used to make wine. Grapes are portable and delicious. The health benefits of eating grapes are many, with studies showing their efficacy in preventing cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure as well as constipation.

Nutrition in grapes

The best serving size of grapes is one cup with 32 grapes. One cup of red grapes contains

  • ·        104 calories
  • ·        1.09 grams of protein
  • ·        0.24 grams of fat
  • ·        1.4 grams of fiber
  • ·        4.8 milligrams of vitamin C
  • ·        10 micrograms of vitamin A
  • ·        288 milligrams of potassium

Grapes are rich in water and thus are good for hydration. High water-content  fruits are usually nutrient dense. They are known to contain a large variety of nutrients while containing few calories. Grapes contain 70 milliliters of fluid per cup. Grapes contain antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin. Red grapes contain a phytochemical resveratrol in their skins. This protects the body from many diseases and conditions. Grapes contain flavonoids myricetin and quercetin which help the body slow down the formation of free radicals.

Benefits of grapes

1. Grapes have antioxidants known as polyphenols, which are known to slow down or even prevent the formation of many types of cancers. It is especially effective against oesophageal, lung, mouth, pharynx, pancreatic, prostate and colon cancer.

2. The flavonoid quercetin has anti-inflammatory properties which reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and protects against damage caused by low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The polyphenol present in grapes helps to reduce the risk of heart disease by preventing platelet build-up and reduce blood pressure.

3. The fiber and potassium present in grapes is also good for the heart. A diet of high potassium and low sodium is necessary to avoid heart trouble. High potassium is also known to reduce the risk of stroke and the formation of kidney stones.

4. Because of its high potassium content, grapes are good for those with high blood pressure. Grapes help to neutralize the effect of sodium on the body.

5. Grapes are rich in water. Eating such kinds of fruits helps to keep you hydrated and regularizes your bowel movements. Grapes also contain fiber, which minimizes constipation.

6. The quercetin in grapes has anti-inflammatory properties. This helps to diminish the symptoms of allergies like running nose and watery eyes.

7. The chemical resveratrol present in grapes protect you from diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy. Resveratrol is beneficial against Alzheimer’s disease and mood swings associated with menopause.

Add grapes to your diet

Grapes are a versatile berry and there are many ways to incorporate it in your diet. You can add grapes to your chicken salad. You can make a fruit cocktail and include grapes, pineapples, sliced peaches and strawberries. Add a bit of honey on top for a sweet flavor. Freeze grapes and eat them on a hot day as desserts. Or simply have a cup of fresh cup of grapes.

Coffee might not be good for your joints...

The morning cup of coffee is as much a part of our waking up ritual as brushing our teeth. The whole morning gets ruined if we don’t get our fresh, hot fragrant coffee. Millions around the world trust coffee to ward off drowsiness while at work or at home. But is coffee really good for you?

The nutrients you take have enormous influence on the quality of your joints. Caffeine, a common stimulant found in coffee, is known to reduce the magnitude of pain associated with many kinds of joint pain. It might even delay or even prevent the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. However, caffeine might not have a direct positive or negative impact on certain kinds of arthritis or joint pain. Further scientific investigation is needed to gain clarity upon any indirect impact of caffeine on joints.

As of now, we don’t know whether caffeine has any impact on the development of arthritis. The January 2002 issue of “Arthritis and Rheumatism” journal found participants who consumed less than 4 cups of decaffeinated coffee per day had an increased risk of developing rheumatoidarthritis. Participants who consumed at least 3 cups of caffeinated tea per day showed a decreased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. These findings seem to suggest that caffeine may possibly stop or delay the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. The November 2003 issue of “Arthritis and Rheumatism” outlines a large-scale study that found little to no evidence linking caffeine and arthritis.

Dr. Markku Heliovaara at National Public Health Institute in Helsinki, Finland, recently discovered that the number of cups of coffee people drank each day was directly proportional to their risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis. However, Heliovaara’s study couldn’t identify if caffeine in the coffee or something else potentially caused the increase in Rheumatoid factor.

Control your daily intake

Caffeine is a stimulant—which must be taken in measured amounts daily. Careful monitoring prevents the onset of side effects of drinking too much coffee. 250 milligrams of coffee (equivalent to 2 to 3 cups of brewed coffee) is considered enough for daily intake. If you take about 500 milligrams a day then you might become prone to side effects like insomnia, stomach upsets, irritability and muscle tremors. If you suffer from anxiety disorders, then lower the amount of coffee you drink since caffeine is known to increase anxiety.

People Who Laugh More Stay Fitter

Laughter keeps stress and pain at bay better than medicine. Laughter is best at recovering mental balance after facing a difficult problem or trauma. Humour is uplifting and elevating. It inspires you with hope and connects you to others. It keeps you pragmatic, alert and focused.

With so many benefits, no wonder laughter is called “the best medicine”. The ability to laugh easily is a rare skill amongst us. Fortunately, this ability can be learned from others. You will experience a heightened sense of joy in your daily life.

Laughter and psychological health

  • Laughter dampens feelings of anxiety and other distressing and unproductive feelings.

  • Laughter allows you to relax more effectively. It increases energy and reduces stress.

  • If you want to solve a difficult problem, you need to look at it from different angles. Laughter shifts your perspective which in turn creates a psychological distance from the problem. This stops you from being overwhelmed.

Try to share your laughter with your dear ones. By incorporating humour into your daily life, you strengthen your connection with your friends and family. Laughter allows you to:

 1. Be less defensive. Your gain distance from your  subconscious  criticisms, judgments and doubts.

 2. Be even more spontaneous than what you are now.  Laughter gives  you an escape route out of your own  head.

 3. Instead of clinging to your unspoken fears and  inhibitions, laughter  allows you to let go.

 4. Helps you to express your true feelings.

Laughter is great for your health

1. Laughter helps the entire body to relax. A good laugh diminishes physical and mental stress, leaving your body reinvigorated.

2. It boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases the release of stress hormones and increases the production of disease-fighting cells.

3. It triggers the release of endorphins. This hormone promotes an overall feeling of satisfaction and well-being. It can even diminish the level of pain.

4. Daily laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow. This protects the heart from cardiovascular problems.

5. People who laugh regularly tend to have lower blood pressure.

6. T cells are special immune cells which wait in the body for activation. Laughter activates the T cells which start to fight diseases.

How to start laughing

1. Smile a lot. A smile is the first indication of laughter. Find your local laughter therapy program and sign up for it. When you notice something pleasing, start smiling at it.

 2. Make a list of things you are  grateful for. This simple activity  of  writing down the positive  aspects of your life takes your  focus away  from the more  negative aspects.  This reminds  you that a lot of  people in this  world have not been  as lucky as  you are.

 3. When you hear laughter  coming from an individual or a  group, try to join with them. Ask  why they are laughing and then reciprocate in an honest way. Don’t be shy.

4. Stay close to positive and humourous people. Listen closely to their amusing conversations. Try to learn new jokes and share with them.

5. Try to add a small amount of humour in your daily conversation. Ask people if they noticed anything funny in their daily life. Ask them to share a good joke.

Here Are 10 Reasons For Taking Calcium

Calcium is essential for your bones and teeth. About 99 percent of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. If you ignore your calcium intake, then you might end up with osteoporosis. Calcium is an important ingredient in effective and speedy blood clotting. The muscle contractions which cause your heart to beat also rely on the calcium concentration in your body.

Symptoms of Calcium deficiency

Fortunately, it is quite easy to spot whether your body is getting adequate calcium or not. If you get frequent muscle ache and twitching along with abrupt cramps and spasms then you might not be getting enough calcium. One may also suffer from:

  • Palpitations,
  • High blood pressure,
  • Osteoporosis,
  • Loose teeth,
  • Insomnia
  • Premenstrual cramps
  • Hypertension
  • Arthritis

Among children, calcium deficiency leads to rickets, where the bones become weak and flexible. They also develop bowed legs and sunken chests. Regular calcium consumption is important for children as well as adults. Availability of calcium in the growing up stage reduces the risk of osteoporosis in old age. Some kind of bone ailment is common in one out of every 3 women and in one out of every 12 men after crossing the age of 50.

Sources of Calcium

Good sources of Calcium include milk, cheese, yogurt, broccoli, kale, Chinese cabbage, Soya beans, tofu, soya drinks, fortified cereal and juices.

Benefits of Calcium

1. Calcium improves bone density and durability. This ensures a correct shape of the body and helps in diminishing the effect of back pain. Calcium keeps the bones in their proper shape and prevents skeletal disorders like arthritis and osteoporosis.

2. Calcium helps in maintaining optimal body weight in men and women. In case the body experiences calcium deficiency, it begins to send out parathyroid hormone which stimulates the bones to release calcium into the blood stream. This hormone prevents the breakdown of fat in the body. Subsequently, you might become obese. Make sure to take enough calcium to prevent obesity.

3. It protects you heart muscles by allowing them to contract and relax properly. Calcium also helps the nervous system in maintaining proper arterial pressure. In case of a deficiency of calcium, a hormone called calcitriol is released. This increases the contraction of the otherwise smooth muscles of the arteries.

4. Adequate calcium intake diminishes the risk of colon cancer and retards the growth of polyps which lead to cancer. Calcium consumption reduces the risk of adenomas and non-malignant tumours in the colon.

5. Calcium slows down the symptoms of premenstrual depression such as dizziness, mood swings and hypertension.

6. The most common kind of kidney stones is oxalate stones. Normal calcium intake decreases the risk of kidney stones.

7. A vegetarian diet with high calcium content will result in lowered blood pressure.

8. Calcium plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Calcium keeps your jaw bone strong which ensures tight-fitting teeth where bacteria cannot thrive.

9. Calcium assists in transportation of nutrients across the body. Nutrients find it easier to penetrate past the cell membrane.

Class-IV Therapy & Its Proven Benefits

Laser therapy refers to the non-surgical use of laser energy to generate a photochemical reaction in damaged and dysfunctional tissue. It is known to diminish pain, reduce inflammation and speed up recovery time from a number of chronic conditions. Laser therapy is a medicine-free technique of treating painful chronic conditions and providing improved functionality as well as mobility.

Class 4 laser therapy has become the standard treatment for many muscular and skeletal injuries. Clinicians are confident in including laser therapy in their diagnosis due to a growing body of scientific literature declaring the rehabilitative power of laser therapy. We now know for certain that class 4 laser therapy improves recovery time and reduces inflammation.

The World Health organization stated that laser therapy is “beneficial in treatment of neck pain”. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) wrote that “Clinicians should consider the use of low-level laser therapy to decrease pain and stiffness”. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) states that “Laser therapy shows strong evidence of effectiveness for pain relief”.

Know about lasers

There are currently three types of laser according to their power output:

Class 3a: 5 milliwatts of power.
Class 3b: 5oo milliwatts or 0.5 watts of power.
Class 4: above 500 milliwatts of power.

The laser of a Class 3a laser is nothing more than that of a standard pointer. Most class 3a lasers use red wavelength. Red laser is useful in treating superficial wounds, abrasions and cuts. It is also effective in treating vitiligo. They do not penetrate far enough to provide pain relief. Infrared lasers can penetrate several centimeters into the body and can be used to treat most injuries.

The benefits of Class 4 laser therapy

Laser therapy helps to reduce pain, diminish inflammation and increase tissue regeneration. Laser therapy is applicable for treating both hard and soft tissue, as well as muscles, ligaments and even bones.

Laser therapy enhances the microcirculation in the problem area. This increases the amount of arterial as well as venous blood cells. Lymphatic access is also increased. The treatment site receives more oxygen as well as nutrients. Finally, the therapy stimulates cytochrome oxidase enzymes in the cell’s mitochondria.

By stimulating cytochrome oxidase enzymes, we are utilizing the oxygen already present in the blood. No matter what the cell is, it becomes rejuvenated.

Try Class 4 laser therapy to treat acute injuries

The best diet program and exercise routine cannot stop you from getting injured. It can happen at any time and any place. Some clinicians will probably recommend surgery to repair or replace the joint altogether.

Laser therapy is good for treating

  1. Spinal decompression.
  2. Acute injuries like sprains, strains and shoulder injuries
  3. Repetitive-use injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.
  4. Traumatic injuries like motor vehicle accident or cervical sprain.
  5. Chronic problems like frozen shoulder orarthritis.

Laser therapy costs a fraction of the cost of surgery and without any known side effect. It can be combined with any existing therapy plan without any problem. Thus, laser therapy has proven itself as a safe and effective alternative to existing therapy plans.

Bone Broth Is Good For Your Aching Joints

Ancient cultures around the world include some kind of bone broth in their daily food. A South American proverb states “a good broth will resurrect the dead”. In today’s rapidly modernizing world, this traditional wisdom is largely lost.

Some of you might remember your grandmother making a chicken broth with a whole chicken fresh from the butcher. The feet are the most important element in the soup as it is rich in collagen and gelatin. Homemade soup has amino acids like proline, glysine and hydroxyproline which are necessary for collagen production.

Arginine (an amino acid) is necessary for the proper functioning of immune system and wound healing. It is needed in the production and release of growth hormones. Glycine prevents the breakdown of protein tissue like muscle and helps to detoxify the body of chemicals while acting as an antioxidant. Proline helps  generate cartilage and heal joints while reducing cellulite in the skin.

The chicken feet brings all the elements together and harmonizes the different flavours. Remember to get the butcher to properly scald and peel the feet before bringing them home.

How to make bone broth

You can make a broth with animal parts alone. The combination of animal products and vegetables work together to fortify each other. They are more beneficial if taken together. The things not commonly found in meat stores (like chicken feet and neck) are especially important. Make sure to buy animal products that are free from antibiotics and hormones.

Items like bones, meat, fat and vegetables are essential in making a good bone broth. If you choose to make beef broth then remember to brown the meat before putting it in a stock pot. Add a bit of apple cider vinegar to the pot to draw the
minerals from the bones.

Cooking suggestions

1. Place the bones in a stock pot and cover with water.

2. Add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to water before cooking.

3. Fill the pot with filtered water. Leave room for the water to boil.

4. Heat slowly. Reduce the heat after it starts to boil and then simmer for a few hours. Remove the scum as it rises.

5. Cook slowly at low temperature. The slow cooking time is necessary to extract the nutrients from the bones.

6. Then add vegetables like onions, garlic, carrots and celery for added nutrition.

The only difference between a stock and a broth is that the stock is made from bones and vegetables, whereas a broth is made only with meat and vegetables.

Both stock and bone broth are rich in nutrients as they are full of collagen and gelatin as well as minerals. They are available in an easily digestible form. You can make them even more nutritious by adding a little fat in the form of cream. These bone broths are essential if you have weak or aching bones.

Benefits of adding zinc in your diet.

A small amount of zinc is great for the body. It has been called an “essential trace element” because of its beneficial impact on the human body if ingested in very small quantities.

Sources of Zinc

The following selection contains healthy amounts of zinc:
Oysters
Toasted wheat germ
Roast beef
Crab
Baked beans
Lobster
Dark chocolate

Zinc deficiency

Usually zinc deficiency is caused by insufficient dietary intake. There are many symptoms of zinc deficiency. These include loss of appetite, anaemia, abnormal taste, stunted growth, altered cognition, diarrhoea and hair loss. Experts believe that around 40% of elderly Indians and about 2
billion people in the world have diets which are deficient in zinc.

Uses of Zinc

Zinc is effective against diarrhoea especially in children who are undernourished or deficient in zinc.

An inherited disorder called Wilson’s disease can be treated by taking zinc by mouth. People who have this disease tend to have too much copper in their body. Zinc blocks the body’s tendency to absorb copper and increases the body’s ability to release copper.

Research suggests that people with acne usually have low levels of zinc. Taking zinc by mouth appears to reduce acne.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica is also an inherited disease which decreases the body’s ability to process and absorb zinc. Taking zinc by mouth appears to improve the symptoms.

Giving a porridge or soup containing zinc helps to treat anemia.

Taking zinc by mouth helps to reduce the symptoms of Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) such as hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Children with ADHD tend to have low zinc levels.

Giving zinc intravenously improves wound closure in people with severe burns. Taking zinc by mouth improves the recovery time for burn wounds.

Lozenges containing zinc can be taken in case of common cold. It helps to reduce the duration of the infection, especially in adults.

Foot ulcers due to diarrhoea get reduced in severity if zinc is taken regularly.

Zinc oxide paste reduces diaper rash in infants.

Zinc plays a role in regulating how neurons communicate with one another. This affects how memories are formed and preserved as well as how we learn.
Zinc prevents cellular damage in the retina. This delays the onset of
age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and loss of vision.
