Coffee might not be good for your joints...

The morning cup of coffee is as much a part of our waking up ritual as brushing our teeth. The whole morning gets ruined if we don’t get our fresh, hot fragrant coffee. Millions around the world trust coffee to ward off drowsiness while at work or at home. But is coffee really good for you?

The nutrients you take have enormous influence on the quality of your joints. Caffeine, a common stimulant found in coffee, is known to reduce the magnitude of pain associated with many kinds of joint pain. It might even delay or even prevent the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. However, caffeine might not have a direct positive or negative impact on certain kinds of arthritis or joint pain. Further scientific investigation is needed to gain clarity upon any indirect impact of caffeine on joints.

As of now, we don’t know whether caffeine has any impact on the development of arthritis. The January 2002 issue of “Arthritis and Rheumatism” journal found participants who consumed less than 4 cups of decaffeinated coffee per day had an increased risk of developing rheumatoidarthritis. Participants who consumed at least 3 cups of caffeinated tea per day showed a decreased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. These findings seem to suggest that caffeine may possibly stop or delay the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. The November 2003 issue of “Arthritis and Rheumatism” outlines a large-scale study that found little to no evidence linking caffeine and arthritis.

Dr. Markku Heliovaara at National Public Health Institute in Helsinki, Finland, recently discovered that the number of cups of coffee people drank each day was directly proportional to their risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis. However, Heliovaara’s study couldn’t identify if caffeine in the coffee or something else potentially caused the increase in Rheumatoid factor.

Control your daily intake

Caffeine is a stimulant—which must be taken in measured amounts daily. Careful monitoring prevents the onset of side effects of drinking too much coffee. 250 milligrams of coffee (equivalent to 2 to 3 cups of brewed coffee) is considered enough for daily intake. If you take about 500 milligrams a day then you might become prone to side effects like insomnia, stomach upsets, irritability and muscle tremors. If you suffer from anxiety disorders, then lower the amount of coffee you drink since caffeine is known to increase anxiety.
