Should You Walk If You Have Knee Pain?

Osteoarthritis is a vicious circle: the pain makes you want to walk less, which in turn makes the pain worse. Have you wondered whether it is advisable to move affected joints?

Many people have gone through a period when the joints are just too painful to move. Then when you finally gather the will to move, the joints are even more sore. Your knees may hurt when you move but it is vital to continue to do the usual daily activities.

If you have arthritis in the knee, you may feel unduly uncomfortable when you first begin to move. This is caused by the inflammation in the knee. If you can manage to walk past the pain, you will feel much better.

Walking regularly in spite of arthritis has many benefits:

1. Walking helps to rebuild your joints. The arthritis erodes the cartilage between the joints. This results in pain, stiffness and a reluctance to move. Regular movement helps to rebuild the joint. The cartilage has greater access to nutrients when the joints are kept moving.

2. Walking keeps the muscles around the joints healthy. This takes some of the pressure off from the joints. The muscles help to bear the weight of the body. This means that you feel less pain.

3. Regular walking helps to keep your weight under control. If you manage to lose just one pound, it means your joints have to deal with four times less pressure and stress. This makes a big difference to painful joints. Walking is classified as a “low-impact” exercise which is great for keeping your weight under control.

How much should you walk?

Try to get about 30 minutes of exercise. Begin with just 10 minutes of walking at first. There is no need to put unnecessary effort in the beginning. Remember to stop exercising if you observe any of the following conditions:
  • Increase in swelling
  • Severe pain
  • Feeling of instability (as if you might fall down any moment)
  • Increased stiffness

Take care to buy walking shoes which are comfortable. After walking, you might feel stiffness and pain in the knees. Lie down with your legs raised and put ice on your knees.

Remember that joints are made to move. Motion itself has a healing effect. While you might feel pain at first, it will help to control joint pain in the long run.
