Stop Plantar Fasciitis From Causing Heel Pain

If your foot is inflamed and causing a lot of pain then you are most probably suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. The pain is usually so bad that it becomes very hard to walk or take part in daily activities.

While the exact cause of Plantar Fasciitis is not entirely clear, it is believed that long periods of standing, excessive exercise and obesity play a role in its occurrence. It is associated with the inward rolling of the foot and a lifestyle involving very little or no exercise.

The problem, while not widespread, is a source of enormous agony. About 10% of people face this debilitating problem at some point of their lives. It is still not known whether the incidence of the
disease is more for one gender.

There are several ways to tackle Plantar Fasciitis:

1. Buy shoes which fit well. Try to select ones which have shanks and have a solid heel counters built in. The shoe must provide adequate support. Don’t wear shoes with worn-out soles. Replace them as soon as possible with new ones.

2. Avoid going barefoot. Try to limit the time spent walking without shoes or slippers.

3. Make sure to warm up properly before beginning your exercise routine. The tight calf muscles can often lead to heel strain. Exercises which stretch your feet help to maintain the integrity of the plantar fascia ligament and prevent heel pain.

4. At the first sign of pain, apply an ice-pack to the bottom of the feet and heel. Try not to stand or walk on concrete.

5. If you are overweight then take steps to lose weight. If your feet are forced to carry less weight then they will be more healthy.

6. A sudden spurt of physical activities can also strain the ligaments in the heel. If you are starting on a sport or exercise then begin slowly. Increase the intensity of the activity gradually.

7. Get enough rest regularly. Elevate your feet as much as possible, especially after exercise, in order to prevent fluids from accumulating.

8. Avoid walking on hard and uneven surfaces.

If the pain persists for more than 2 weeks, then
consult your doctor. You might be required to use crutches or other kinds of support. In such a situation, you need to put less pressure on the affected feet. He might suggest the use of night splints or suggest physical therapy.

Take Care Of Joint Pain Right At Home.

Joint pain has many causes: it occurs due to overuse, or an autoimmune reaction or simply due to ageing. Many pharmaceuticals have various “miracle” products in the market, products which make grand claims regarding their efficacy; claims which they seldom substantiate with evidence. Such products are costly, don’t often work and can lead to unseemly side effects. On the other hand, homemade remedies can be made with ingredients available at the local grocery. Such remedies are affordable and without any known side effects.

1. There are many home remedies made from stinging nettles. They are known to relieve joint pain in arthritis and gout. You can make tea with the dried leaves of the plant. The heat of the tea neutralizes the little stinging hairs.

2. Cayenne pepper can be found in most cupboards. They are mostly used for their spicy flavor. The
pepper contains Capsaicin which provides temporary relief from joint pain by causing local irritation. Mix 2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper with half a cup of cocoa butter, lanolin or coconut oil. Apply directly to the affected joint.

3. Homemade remedies made from grape juice relieve joint pain, while reducing swelling and stiffness. Pectin is found in the cells of many plants and acts as a thickener in preparations. Grape juice contains antioxidants like anthocyanins, which is noted for its effect on reducing inflammation. Pectin regulates the flow of fluids in plant cells and is believed to act to relieve fluid buildup in the joints of arthritis sufferers. Mix 1/2 cup of juice with 2 tablespoons pectin. Add water if needed and drink twice daily for 6 weeks.

4. Turmeric and ginger are both anti-inflammatory agents and will help with osteoarthritis  and rheumatoid arthritis. Its active ingredient is called curcumin, which is a powerful antioxidant. In addition, it lowers the levels of 2 enzymes responsible for causing inflammation. You can take these in a capsule form or make a nice spicy tea to enjoy daily.

5. Epsom salt contains magnesium sulfate. A naturally occurring mineral, magnesium sulfate has been used to get relief from pain for years. Magnesium is something our bodies need, but we can’t produce ourselves. It is used in over 300 different biomechanical responses in our body. You can get magnesium as supplements, or eat food like dark leafy greens like spinach. You can also apply magnesium oil on the affected joints.

6. Rub a bit of olive oil onto the sore joints twice a day. You can also take 2-3 tablespoons daily. A
compound in virgin olive oil is called oleocanthal. It inhibits inflammatory enzymes COX-1 and COX-2.

7. Dandelion leaves can help repair damaged tissue and help the liver clear toxins out of the blood. It contains high concentration of vitamin A and C. Studies have shown anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of linoleic acid in them. Make dandelion tea, steep 3 teaspoons of fresh leaves or 1 teaspoon dried in 1 cup of boiling water. Strain and drink twice daily.

8.Exercise is vital for those who suffer from joint pain, or arthritis. Exercise will help control weight and strengthens the muscles that support the joint, even when the cartilage is thinning. Exercise lubricates the joints, allowing them to move more freely.

Do You Have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Find Out Now.

The carpal tunnel syndrome refers to the tingling sensation of numbness and other such problems caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist.

The carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve. Anything which makes the carpal tunnel smaller (such as a swelling) puts pressure on the median nerve.

What causes this swelling? Illnesses like Hypothyroidism, Rheumatoid Arthritis often
causes swelling. Repetitive hand movements also cause swelling. Pregnancy is also known to cause swelling.

Symptoms
  • Numbness or pain in the hand or forearm.
  • Frequent tingling and numbness.
  • Occasional pain in the forearm.
  • Stiffness in the fingers, especially in the morning.

To check whether you have the syndrome, the doctor often checks the feeling and appearance of your neck, shoulders, arms, wrists and hands.

While surgery is an option, you can take care of your hands to make sure you stay away from the syndrome. You can try to stay within a healthy weight and not use cigarettes.

To take good care of your hands:
  • Keep your wrists in a neutral position.
  • Use the whole hand to hold objects—don’t use just your wrists.
  • Keep your wrists straight while you type.
  • If you can, use different hands when you have to make repetitive movements.

Home treatment
  • Rest your fingers, hands and wrists for a while. Try to avoid activities which you think are causing numbness and pain.
  • Put an ice pack on your wrist for 10 to 15 minutes. Do this once every hour.
  • Wear a wrist splint at night to keep your wrists in a neutral position. This relieves pressure on your median nerve

Alternative treatment

You can also try out alternative treatments to ease the symptoms instead of going for surgery at the outset.

Arthritis patients should not let depression and stress worsen heart health...

Depression and stress along with anger and anxiety accelerates the building up of fatty deposits in the arteries. This only worsens atherosclerosis and heart disease.
Such patients usually lack adequate social support. Their arthritis makes them feel disabled and left out of society at large. This sense of helplessness, pain and loneliness may lead to depression, stress, anger and anxiety. According to the study published in Arthritis Care and Research, such patients need psychological therapy and support along with treatment for arthritis.

About 1.5 million people are suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is classified as an autoimmune disease which causes fatigue along with joint pain, swelling and stiffness. Researchers already know that heart disease is prevalent among arthritis patients. The reasons for their increased susceptibility to heart disease was, however, not known until now. The study finds a strong link between psychological problems and increased intensity of atherosclerosis.

The study found that job stress increases the intensity of carotid plaque. The lack of social support structures like friends and families only increases the risk. Patients with adequate social support show a lower risk of heart disease. The study has identified depression, stress, anxiety and anger as influential atherosclerosis markers. Such factors can help to predict the incidence of heart disease in arthritis patients.

How to identify depression

1. Loss of interest in daily activities. Lack of interest in activities you previously enjoyed.

2. Feeling hopeless and worthless.

3. Dramatic change in appetite and weight. If you have gained more than 5% of your body weight in one month, then you are in trouble.

4. Feeling angry and easily irritable.

5. Careless behaviour. Having desire for escapist behaviour such as drug use, compulsive gambling or dangerous sports.

6. Loss of vitality.

7. Feeling of self-loathing.

8. Restless focus. You might have problems focusing on a specific task.

How to recover

Ask for help. You cannot treat depression on your own. You need help. It is very difficult for the depressed to seek help. You might feel that you are needlessly exposing a mental weakness before others. But this is a necessary step.

Having strong relationships with other people speeds up recovery. Depression tends to intensify in isolation. There is no need to feel like a burden.

You can make several changes to your lifestyle to aid recovery. You can cultivate strong relationships, get regular exercise, sleep according to a schedule, eat nutritious food etc. They can also help in your recovery.

Manage Osteoarthritis With Better Sleep

Researchers have found a strong connection between osteoarthritispain, depression and loss of sleep. The depression worsens the sense of being disabled and ostracized from the society at large.

A study published in Arthritis Care & Research stated that poor sleep increases depression. The connection between sleep loss and pain is still unclear.

Even in the 21st century, arthritis continues to be one of the top three concerns for the elderly. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis people suffer from. The disease causes enormous strain on the country’s fragile healthcare infrastructure while draining the pockets of the patients. Previously, numerous studies have shown that people with osteoarthritis have trouble initiating and maintaining sleep. They also suffer from general sleep disorders.

Sleep disturbance is a common complaint among those with osteoarthritis. The pain worsens any
preexisting sleep problems. The three elements—pain, sleep loss and depression—are intimately connected. One aspect reinforces the others.

Findings of the study indicate an independent relationship between pain and depression. While disability alone is not linked to sleep disturbance, individuals with high pain report poor sleep patterns. Sleep disturbance was found to increase depression and perception of disability. The study discovers a strong role in reinforcing sleep loss due to osteoarthritis pain.

Physical therapy for osteoarthritis pain

1. Both heat and cold are known to be effective at relieving pain. Warm showers and hot packs can bring relief to stiff muscles. Cold packs numb the area of pain and increase blood circulation. Cold can also reduce swelling and inflammation.

2. Get hold of a physical therapist and work out a safe and effective exercise program. Inactivity makes pain worse. Try to be physically active in spite of the pain.

3. A back brace can relieve pain. A brace allows you to move around in spite of the weakness in your bones. If you use a brace too long then it will weaken your muscles. Try to exercise as soon as the doctor says it’s safe.

How to get better sleep

1. You can try to increase your melatonin levels by eating melatonin-rich foods like alfalfa sprouts and sunflower seeds.

2. Don’t use electronic items with screens (like televisions and tablets) in the dark. Such screens emit blue light which is known to disrupt sleep pattern.

3. Go to sleep early. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep daily. It might take some time to adjust to a new sleep pattern.
4. Expose yourself to sunlight as much as possible. Sunlight has been known to help regulate the
circadian pattern.

5. Change your diet to include foods rich in bone-building nutrients.

10 Healthy Foods For Your Bones

Bones are alive. The cells in the bones are born, grow old and die, only to be replaced by newer cells. People often think that their bones are “lifeless”. The human skeletal system is a complex, slowly changing structure. This structure is made of:

  • Collagen, a protein that gives bones their flexibility.
  • Calcium-phosphate mineral complex, which makes the bones strong.
  • Bone cells, which remove and replace weakened sections of the bones.

Strong bones need two key elements: calcium and vitamin D. Calcium supports the bones and teeth structure while vitamin D improves calcium absorption and promotes bone growth.

If you develop osteoporosis, then the disease makes your bones brittle. Getting sufficient calcium and
vitamin D slow down the effects of the disease.

Adults under the age of 50 need 1000 milligram of calcium and 200 international units (IUs) of vitamin D every day. People over 50 need 1200 milligrams of calcium and 400 to 600 IU of vitamin D per day. While calcium supplements are available, the simplest and most delicious way to take calcium is to eat calcium-rich food.

1. Yogurt: While most people get vitamin D from the exposure to the Sun, certain foods like yogurt contain lot of vitamin D. Just one cup of yogurt is enough to get the daily requirement of calcium. Fat-free plain yogurt contains more calcium than Greek yogurts.

2. Milk: Eight ounces of fat-free milk will cost you 90 calories while giving you 30% of your daily calcium requirement.  Try to look for the brand which also provides vitamin D along with calcium.

3. Cheese: While cheese has plenty of calories, it is also rich in calcium. So take care not to eat too much of it. Just 1.5 ounces of cheese are enough to meet 30% of your daily calcium requirement. Most cheese contains a small amount of vitamin D, but sadly it is not enough to meet the daily requirement.

4. Sardines: They are small fish often sold in cans. They contain high concentration of vitamin D and calcium. While undoubtedly they look odd, they are delicious to the tongue and healthy to the bones.

5. Eggs: They are no doubt a complete food. No wonder children and adolescents are given at least one egg every day to eat. While the egg contains just 6% vitamin D, it is present in an easily absorbable form.

6. Salmon: It is well-known for containing omega-3 fatty acids. A single 3 ounce piece of salmon will provide you the required calcium. Thus, salmon may be said to be healthy for the heart and the bones.
7.Spinach: Just one cup of spinach contains almost 25% of your daily calcium along with fiber, iron and vitamin A.

8. Fortified cereals: they contain 25% of your daily vitamin D. People who don’t have the time to make salmon or spinach can easily eat cereals.

9. Tuna: It is an excellent source of vitamin D. It contains about 39% of the daily required dose of calcium.

10. Orange juice: While it does not contain calcium, it is often fortified to contain this nutrient. Many studies show that the juice contains ascorbic acid which helps in absorption of calcium.

What’s Good About Vitamin C?

If you want to avoid the seasonal cough and cold this winter then make sure you take enough vitamin C. Fortunately for you, many kinds of foods are rich in vitamin C. Thus, you only need to tweak your diet to make sure that you do not suffer from vitamin C deficiency. If you smoke, then you are particularly at risk because smoking reduces the body’s ability to absorb vitamin C.

Signs of vitamin C deficiency are dry hair, inflammation of the gums, rough and dry skin, slow rate of wound healing, easy bruising, nosebleeds and a weak immunity system. Scurvy is the most severe form of vitamin C deficiency. If you have any of these symptoms, then you should be careful to include foods with vitamin C in your diet.

Health benefits of vitamin C

1. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant, which means that it protects your body from diseases
including arthritis, heart disease and even cancer. As an antioxidant, it prevents free radicals from damaging the DNA. Over time, the effect of free radicals leads to ageing.

2. It is important for the production of collagen (which helps to keep your skin smooth and supple).

3. It is an active ingredient in the building of body tissue, tendons and ligament. Even blood vessels are built using vitamin C.

4. Vitamin C is absolutely essential in repairing and maintaining bones and teeth.

5. By synthesizing stress hormones like adrenaline, vitamin C protects the brain and the nervous system from the harmful effects of stress.

6. Vitamin C prevents common cold from escalating. Taking vitamin C in case of cold and lung infection shows enormous improvement. Vitamin C reduces the risk of developing pneumonia and other lung infections.

7. If you want to control your cholesterol level then make sure you take enough vitamin C. It speeds up the conversion of cholesterol into bile salts. In such a form, it can be easily eliminated from the body.

8. In people suffering from heart disease, vitamin C helps to keep the blood vessels dilated. This improves the blood flow to vital organs.

9. It reduces the dryness of your skin as well as prevents the formation of wrinkles.

How much vitamin C is enough

According to researchers, 500 milligrams of vitamin C per day is sufficient for you to get benefit from it. Unless you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, you need to take dietary supplements to meet any potential shortfall.

Where to get vitamin C

Here are some great sources of vitamin C which are available in the month of winter:
  • Guava—one medium fruit contains 280% of daily value.
  • Broccoli—one cup contains 168% of daily value.
  • Orange—one medium fruit contains 128% of daily value.
  • Brussels sprouts—one cup contains 125% of daily value.
  • Kiwi—one medium fruit contains 120% of the daily value.
