Stop Plantar Fasciitis From Causing Heel Pain

If your foot is inflamed and causing a lot of pain then you are most probably suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. The pain is usually so bad that it becomes very hard to walk or take part in daily activities.

While the exact cause of Plantar Fasciitis is not entirely clear, it is believed that long periods of standing, excessive exercise and obesity play a role in its occurrence. It is associated with the inward rolling of the foot and a lifestyle involving very little or no exercise.

The problem, while not widespread, is a source of enormous agony. About 10% of people face this debilitating problem at some point of their lives. It is still not known whether the incidence of the
disease is more for one gender.

There are several ways to tackle Plantar Fasciitis:

1. Buy shoes which fit well. Try to select ones which have shanks and have a solid heel counters built in. The shoe must provide adequate support. Don’t wear shoes with worn-out soles. Replace them as soon as possible with new ones.

2. Avoid going barefoot. Try to limit the time spent walking without shoes or slippers.

3. Make sure to warm up properly before beginning your exercise routine. The tight calf muscles can often lead to heel strain. Exercises which stretch your feet help to maintain the integrity of the plantar fascia ligament and prevent heel pain.

4. At the first sign of pain, apply an ice-pack to the bottom of the feet and heel. Try not to stand or walk on concrete.

5. If you are overweight then take steps to lose weight. If your feet are forced to carry less weight then they will be more healthy.

6. A sudden spurt of physical activities can also strain the ligaments in the heel. If you are starting on a sport or exercise then begin slowly. Increase the intensity of the activity gradually.

7. Get enough rest regularly. Elevate your feet as much as possible, especially after exercise, in order to prevent fluids from accumulating.

8. Avoid walking on hard and uneven surfaces.

If the pain persists for more than 2 weeks, then
consult your doctor. You might be required to use crutches or other kinds of support. In such a situation, you need to put less pressure on the affected feet. He might suggest the use of night splints or suggest physical therapy.
