The carpal tunnel syndrome refers to the tingling sensation
of numbness and other such problems caused by pressure on the median nerve in
the wrist.
The carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the
median nerve. Anything which makes the carpal tunnel smaller (such as a
swelling) puts pressure on the median nerve.
Symptoms
- Numbness or pain in the hand or forearm.
- Frequent tingling and numbness.
- Occasional pain in the forearm.
- Stiffness in the fingers, especially in the morning.
To check whether you have the syndrome, the doctor often
checks the feeling and appearance of your neck, shoulders, arms, wrists and
hands.
While surgery is an option, you can take care of your hands
to make sure you stay away from the syndrome. You can try to stay within a
healthy weight and not use cigarettes.
To take good care of your hands:
- Keep your wrists in a neutral position.
- Use the whole hand to hold objects—don’t use just your wrists.
- Keep your wrists straight while you type.
- If you can, use different hands when you have to make repetitive movements.
Home treatment
- Rest your fingers, hands and wrists for a while. Try to avoid activities which you think are causing numbness and pain.
- Put an ice pack on your wrist for 10 to 15 minutes. Do this once every hour.
- Wear a wrist splint at night to keep your wrists in a neutral position. This relieves pressure on your median nerve
Alternative treatment
You can also try out alternative treatments to ease the
symptoms instead of going for surgery at the outset.
