Usually, uric acid dissolves in blood and is sent to the
kidneys, from where it is passes out in the urine. In case of too much uric
acid, you can suffer from conditions like hyperuricemia which in turn leads to
gout. In case of gout, needle-like crystals of uric acid get collected in the
joints, capillaries and the skin. Kidney stones are also known to form due to
deposition of sodium urate crystals.
Normal range of uric acid is between 3.5 and 7.2 mg/dL. If
you get abnormal results, it may be due to acidosis, diabetes, gout or even
lead poisoning.
Why do you have
excess uric acid?
- Diuretic medication.
- Drinking alcohol in excess.
- Hypothyroidism
- Obesity
- Psoriasis
- Inability of the kidneys to filter waste matter
- Purine-rich diet – too much meat, sardines, anchovies etc.
What diet to follow ?
The general dietary recommendations to control uric acid are
similar to a healthy balanced diet.
1. Being overweight increases the chances of producing excess
uric acid, which in turn can lead to gout. Losing weight and restricting the
consumption of calories lowers uric acid levels and reduces the intensity and
number of gout attacks. Losing weight also decreases the stress on the joints
and the circulatory system.
2. Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains which provide
complex carbohydrates. Foods like white bread, cakes, candy and beverages with
high-fructose corn syrup should be avoided.
3. You should keep yourself hydrated by drinking water
regularly. Remember to drink between 8 to 16 glasses of water every day. For more
accurate picture, talk to your doctor.
4. Restrict the amount of lean meat, fish and poultry items.
Make up for the protein loss by taking low-fat dairy products.
5. Remove meats like liver and kidneys from your diet. They are
high in purine and increase the secretion of uric acid.
6. Seafood like
anchovies, herring and sardines are rich in purine, Try to avoid such
foods.
Following an appropriate dies can reduce the production of
uric acid and aid its elimination from the body. If you already have gout, then
don’t stop taking the medicines. Regular exercise can compliment diet control
nicely.
