How To Untangle Your Work And Life

Today’s workplace is technologically advanced. Technology has made it possible for employees to work even when they are not at the office. This means that their work takes up the time which was previously used to leisurely activities. Employees who consider their work to be part of their identity are more likely to not notice this intrusion. Such employees want to be “on the job” even when not physically present in the office.

Since the number of stress-related disabilities has sky-rocketed, the ability and willingness to balance one’s work (career and ambitions) with one’s lifestyle (personal health, family life, religious affiliation etc) is a valuable skill.

Persistent imbalance causes stress, which in turn leads to various problems like heart disease, sexual health trouble and even a weaker immune system. It can also put enormous strain on family relations. Some people try to compensate such imbalance by indulging in dangerous habits like binge-drinking and smoking.

Many workers feel guilty that are not working “hard enough” if they do decide to take part in lifestyle activities. In order to “get ahead”, they feel, they need to work more, even if it means sacrificing part of their leisure time. They are not aware that their life outside of work is also important. Life is too important to be sacrificed for work.

How to balance work and life

1. Stop perfectionism before it ruins your life. It is relatively easy to be a perfectionist as a kid, but as you become an adult you realize that there are many elements of your life which you can no longer control. As you climb the corporate ladder, you will realize that your work is making it difficult to maintain a healthy family life. Then, perfectionism becomes a toxic mental barrier. It begins to prevent you from enjoying your work as well as your family and friends. The path out of perfectionism is to realize that no one can be the perfect employee. We must strive for excellence, not perfection.

2. Make a habit to shut off your phone when you are at home. In this hectic age of high-speed communication, it is important to carve out a time for yourself and your family. Phone notifications can interrupt pleasurable activities and inject stress into your life.

3. When you plan your week, remember to schedule some time for your family and friends. Make accurate plans and stick to them no matter what contingency arises at work.

4. Stop activities which use up your time in a wasteful manner. While at the office, try not to waste time gossiping with a colleague. Focus on your work. Remember, if you can finish your work on time, then you can enjoy leisurely activities.

5. Everyone has errands. Can you manage to outsource some of your time-consuming errands to others? See if you can complete your errands online. Get your family members to share the burden you have. This strengthens relationships with your loved ones.

6. Exercise keeps you healthy and makes you alert. Many people experience greater mental clarity after exercising. Try to go to the gym at least thrice a week.

7. Even on a hectic day, find at least 15 minutes to do something relaxing. It can be something simple like staring out of your window or working out the crossword puzzle. You certainly can make a little time for things that make you happy.

8. Try to prioritise by allowing only a specific amount of time to complete a task. Don’t let yourself get caught up in unstructured meetings with tedious colleagues. This means that you will be forced to work smarter.

Care for yourself

1. Make sure to get enough sleep. Lack of sleep causes enormous sleep on your entire body. Avoid using electronic devices before going to bed. The “blue” light that such devices emit decreases your melatonin (a hormone associated with sleep).

2. Make time for fun and relaxing activities. If you enjoy doing yoga or just bicycling, then remember to do them after or before work.

3. Volunteer for socially-aware activities. Research shows that volunteering for useful activities helps to create a sense of well-being and fraternity among volunteers.

4. Share some of your responsibilities with your friends and family. Let them do some of the errands. Enlist trusted friends to do child care for you.
