How To Sleep Better In Rheumatoid Arthritis

Many people with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) complain of poor sleep. The most intense symptoms of this condition are joint pain and stiffness. This can make ordinary activities a challenge and can interfere with the sleeping process. Lack of sleep can actually contribute to the sensation of pain. The hapless victim becomes trapped in a vicious cycle of pain and sleeplessness.

What causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?

This condition is the result of the immune system attacking the delicate lining of the joints. This causes thickening of the synovium, which degrades the bones and the cartilage. The joint gradually loses its shape and alignment with the rest of the body. This can lead to complete disability.

Risk factors
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Family history
  • Smoking
  • Obesity

How to get better sleep

1. Keep a strict sleeping schedule: This will gradually train your body to enter “sleep mode” at the right time. Establishing a routine may seem boring at first, but it adds much needed discipline in your life.

2. Avoid activities in bed: Many people have the habit of reading or watching TV in the bed. If you want proper sleep then use your bed for nothing other than sleep. This will mean that your body will begin to associate the bed with sleep.

3. Be physically active in daytime: Do simple activities like walking, swimming or just gardening. This will help you expend energy and prepare your body for the night’s rest. Physical activity will help you control your weight and stave off the feeling of being lonely.

4. Avoid pressure: Don’t use heavy blankets or bulky bedding as it puts pressure on the damaged joint. This weight worsens the symptoms of RA and makes sleeping difficult.

5. Manage worries: RA can be a mentally distressing condition. Most RA patients report anxiety and fear about the future. Research shows that such patients are prone to depression. In such condition, sleep can become a daunting challenge. To deal with this situation, try to write down the depressing thoughts and try to find out whether you can do something about them. This allows you to focus on the solution to the problems and this inspires hope.

6. Eat light: Don’t have a heavy dinner before going to bed. This will make sleeping uncomfortable. Try to finish your dinner at least 2 hours before bedtime.
