Poor Bone Health In Kids Linked To Fast Food

A new report published in the journal Osteoporosis International suggests that regular consumption of fast food is bad for the bone health in children. Excessive consumption of fast food interferes with the development of the skeletal structure in children, especially in early childhood. The researchers found that better the access to stores selling healthy food, greater was their bone mass. This link was especially observable in young children.

The study observed the bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) of 1107 children at birth and at four years of age. The same children were also tested at the age of 6 years. This data was correlated to the number of supermarkets, healthy food stores and fast food centres in the child’s neighbourhood.

The report focused on the availability of various kinds of food in a neighbourhood. Mothers and children living in areas where healthy food is easily available tend to have healthier skeletons. The easy availability of fast food has a negative impact on the health of mother and child. According to researcher Cyrus Cooper of the University of Southampton, a healthy food creates the optimum environment for bone development. The food environment has an enormous influence on the diet of
the mother and the child.

According to Cooper, more research is needed to find out how easy access to fast food affects our dietary choices. The study found that any improvement in the food environment brought positive change in the dietary habits of the residents. Such changes would especially help young children make appropriate food choices. This would also undercut the influence of fast food advertisements on young children.

While more research is definitely needed to further test the findings of the study, the results support the introduction of zoning laws to restrict the number of fast food shops and increase the number of stores offering healthy, organic food to their customers. Strict zoning laws can be further used to shut down unnecessary fast food stores in vulnerable and poor neighbourhoods where general health is already in decline.
