Ease Your Knee Pain Using These Tips

With today’s hyperactive society, where people are involved in a number of activities in their day-to-day life, problems involving the knee has become common. It is one of the most frequently occurring musculoskeletal complaints that make people wary. It can prevent you from leading a normal life and stop you from enjoying your daily activities. Knee pain has a wide variety of causes and treatments.

Causes of knee pain

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Sprained ligament
  • Cartilage tear
  • Dislocation of the knee cap

Tips to treat knee pain

1. Rest
The best primary solution for sore knees is to give your knees some rest that they deserve. Give proper rest to your knees. Avoid intense activity for a few days. If it’s not possible to give complete rest, at least do not over-strain them.

2. Ice
Apply ice on the affected area for 15-20 minutes every 3-4 hours for a few days until the pain subsides. Ice helps in reducing pain and inflammation.

3. Hot and cold therapy
Heat reduces stiffness, stimulates blood flow, improves circulation, relaxes muscles, and helps in increasing the range of motion. Cold therapy reduces swelling which helps to lessen joint pain. You should never apply heat to a knee that is already warm and irritated. Cold should never be applied to a joint that is stiff and has decreased range of motion. It should be kept in mind that heat relaxes muscles whereas cold reduces inflammation and pain.

4. Compression
Compression is wrapping the injured or sore area with an elastic bandage. Compression helps to reduce swelling. Do not wrap the sore area too tightly as it may cause more swelling in the affected area. If the bandage is too tight, you might feel a numbing sensation, tingling and greater pain in the area.

5. Right footwear
Footwear that has cushioning in the sole reduces the impact of shock in the knee joint, when you are suffering from an injured knee. Avoid wearing footwear with high heels. Shoes that are specially made for fitness and sports are the best bet.

6. Elevation

Elevate the injured or sore area on pillows when you are sitting or lying down. Try to keep the area at or above the level of your heart to help minimize swelling.

7. Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy comforts a sore knee and relaxes the muscles. Patients who receive physiotherapy also report improvement and comfort from pain.
