Warning Signs Of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Do your joints feel warm and tender? Do your stiff joints make it difficult to move about? Are you tired all the time?

Beware! You may be suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

It is a serious autoimmune disease which usually affects the joints of the body. Unlike Osteoarthritis, it can strike at any age. If left untreated, this disease can cause permanent disability and joint deformities. Other organs in the body can also be severely affected by RA.

However, early treatment can help avoid permanent joint damage and disability. In order to detect the disease, you need to know about its signs and symptoms.

Warning signs of Rheumatoid Arthritis

1. Morning stiffness: People with RA have difficulty doing simple activities after they get up in the morning. For example: you may find it difficult to make a fist. You may also feel tender swelling on the wrist.

2. Swollen joints: The swelling is most likely to affect one or more knuckles in your hand. The swelling usually occurs in both hands. The swelling feels warm and soft. You may also notice a slight redness over the swollen parts.

3. Swelling for more than 6 weeks: If the swelling lasts longer than 6 weeks, it is a strong sign of RA. This swelling can affect small and large joints.

4. Walking becomes difficult: You may feel swelling under the feet, especially in the morning. You may find it difficult to walk.

5. Fatigue, fever and weight loss: You may experience flu-like symptoms such as continuous low fever and fatigue. Some people have small bumps or nodules near their elbows. Weight loss is also a common occurrence.

Risk factors
  • Gender: Women are at greater risk of getting RA than men.
  • Age: While the disease can occur at any age, it usually occurs between the ages of 40 and 60.
  • Smoking: People who smoke regularly are at a greater risk of RA than non-smokers.
  • Environmental factors: Chronic exposure to silica and asbestos tends to increase the risk of RA.
  • Obesity: Researchers have found that people who are overweight are easily susceptible to RA.

RA can be a highly aggressive disease which can permanently cripple you. If you have any one of the above-stated symptoms, then you should consult a specialized clinic without any delay and take their expert advice seriously.
