Is Ginger Good For Your Bones?

Ginger continues to be a widely cultivated spice. It is commonplace in the kitchens of South Asia. Numerous studies show that it is a versatile natural health remedy. Researchers have discovered around 100 health benefits. It has been used in Ayurveda for centuries — ginger is part of more than 50% of all traditional health remedies.

Ginger is a delicious spice which is loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds. It is widely used in dishes such as stir-fried soups.

It is known to cure nausea — you can get ginger tablets to cure motion sickness.

Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. It promotes bone density if consumed regularly. One study found that ginger changes the biochemical pathways activated by chronic inflammation. This means that ginger helps to halt the processes that lead to the occurrence of inflammation.

Health benefits of ginger

1. Ginger has a long history of being used as a remedy for sea-sickness. It can also be used to relieve nausea and vomiting after surgery, and in cancer patients after undergoing chemotherapy.

2. It helps to reduce exercise-induced muscle pain. In one study, it was found that people consuming just 2 grams of ginger per day for 11 days experienced less muscle pain than those who did not eat any ginger.

3. In a study involving 247 people with osteoarthritis, those who took ginger extracts experienced less pain compared to those who did not. The powerful anti-inflammatory effect of ginger helps to reduce joint pain and stiffness. Ginger is known to boost bone health and diminish joint pain. A study conducted by the University of Miami on several hundred patients shows that the group which took ginger supplements felt notable pain reduction while the other group (which did not take ginger) felt no change in their condition. Ginger is rich in gingerols, a unique organic compound which has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect on the body.

4. In 2015, a study was conducted on participants with type 2 diabetes. Some were given 2 grams of ginger powder while the others were not. The people who took ginger had their blood sugar lowered by 12%.

5. Ginger relieves chronic indigestion or dyspepsia. It speeds up the time taken for the stomach to empty from 16 minutes to 12 minutes.

6. Many women suffer from menstrual pain. Ginger is known to provide relief from pain.

7. Ginger extracts reduce the concentration of bad cholesterol LDL, which is linked to increased risk
of heart disease. Ginger also plays a role in reducing the concentration of triglycerides in the blood.

8. In alternative treatment, ginger has been used to slow down the growth of cancer cells. The potency of ginger against cancer is attributed to 6-gingerol, a substance found in raw ginger.

9. Ginger acts against oxidative stress and inflammation which accelerate the ageing process. It prevents the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease. The bioactive compounds present within ginger can inhibit inflammatory reaction in the brain.
