What is Cervical spondylosis?
Cervical spondylosis or spinal arthritis is a condition where the joints and discs in the neck get affected. This occurs due to the wear and tear of the cartilage and bones found in the cervical spine which is in the neck.
The pain can vary from chronic and severe to moderate where the person might be able to do their daily activities. Spondylosis is mostly age-related as it often occurs in people over the age of 60.
Factors that give rise to Cervical spondylosis
1. Neck injury
An injury due to a fall or accident may affect the cartilage and bones in the neck causing pain.
2. Overuse or strain
Some activities like construction work cause strain on the neck due to repetitive movements or heavy lifting. This causes early wear and tear of the spine.
3. Genetic factors
The risk of spondylosis increases if it runs in the family.
4. Dehydrated spinal discs
The discs or pad like cushions in between the spinal bones help in absorbing the shock of any injury, lifting of a heavy load, twisting and other activities. This gel-like material dries out with age, which causes the bones to rub together and cause pain. The gel-like material usually starts drying after the age of 40.
5. Herniated discs
If the spinal discs develop cracks, it results in the leakage of the gel-like material. This material can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, resulting in numbness.
Pain relieving exercises
Stretching and exercising on a regular basis helps in increasing the range of motion in the joints, reduces joint stiffness and pain. It helps in increasing muscle strength and endurance.
Exercising will also help to reduce weight and avoid putting extra pressure on the painful joints. Don’t forget to consult your doctor before beginning any exercise routine.
Some exercises that can be done to ease the pain are:
1. Isometric Exercise :
Isometric exercises help to strengthen neck muscles. These exercises are done in static positions and the muscle length does not change.
2. Strength training :
Strength exercises can help muscles give better support to the spine. Do exercises like back extensions that will strengthen your core and back muscles while simultaneously improving your posture.
3. Flexibility exercise :
These exercises reduce spasm and stiffness while improving flexibility and range of motion.
4. Stretching :
Simple stretching helps to relieve tension and regain range of motion. Always consult a therapist before undergoing stretching exercises. These exercises can help open up the spaces in between the discs and relieve the pain. It could create a gentle tension but you shouldn’t overdo it. Keep your posture right while stretching.
