Do you dread that first step you take out of bed? Do you flinch with a sting in your heels after long hours of work? You might be suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. It is more common among the middle-aged. It also occurs among the young who are into intense activities like athletics.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fascia is a flat band of tissue or ligament that connects your heel bone to your toes. This ligament supports the arch of your foot.
Plantar fasciitis is caused when this ligament is strained. With strain, the ligament gets weak, swollen and irritated. Repeated strain may cause tiny tears in the ligament. Due to this, the heel or bottom of your foot would hurt when you stand or walk.
Symptoms
- Stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot near the heel.
- Pain is at its worst after getting up in the morning.
- Pain can also be triggered by long periods of standing or getting up from a seated position after a long time.
- The pain lessens after a few minutes of walking.
- Swelling and redness in the heel area.
- The bouts of pain may continue for weeks, months or years.
- Obesity: Excess weight puts pressure on the plantar fascia.
- Stressful physical activity: Activities like long distance running, dancing, aerobics etc strains the ligaments and may cause tiny tears. This may trigger an early onset of plantar fasciitis.
- Age: People who are above the age of 40 are more prone to plantar fasciitis.
- Footwear: Footwears that are ill-fitting or have high heels result in uneven distribution of body weight over the heels.
- Other factors: High arches, flat foot and abnormal pattern of walking can also be reasons for plantar fasciitis.
Remedies
- Maintain your body weight: Excessive weight puts pressure on the ligaments. Exercise to maintain the right weight. Avoid having fatty foods.
- Indulge in low–impact exercises: If the pain is more, avoid intense activities like running or jogging.
- Do stretch exercises: Simple stretching exercises can stretch the calf muscles, Achilles tendon and plantar fascia. This will reduce the stiffness and relax the muscles.
- Apply ice: Regular ice massage over the area can help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Wear the right footwear: Avoid wearing high heels, ill-fitting and worn –out shoes as it strains the ligaments. Don’t go barefoot on hard surfaces. Use shoes that have a soft cushioning in the sole.
