Clicking Knees – is it a cause for concern?

Did you ever hear cracking or popping sounds from your knees when you are climbing stairs or squatting down? Have you wondered what might be the cause of your knees clicking?

If the clicking or popping sound of your knees is not accompanied by pain or swelling, there is no reason to worry. But if it is otherwise, it may be a consequence of other underlying problems.

What can be the cause behind your clicking knees?

1. Cartilage injury

The cartilage in the joint protects the bones at their ends and reduces friction. But in case of a severe injury or damage to the cartilage, its pieces might break off and get stuck in the knee joint.

2. Arthritis

Clicking of the knee can also result from arthritis of the leg. The knee gets inflamed which forces it to align differently when compared to the usual condition. The non-alignment might cause the knee to click.

3. Meniscus tear

A meniscus is a band of cartilage between the bones of the knee joint. It acts as a shock absorber and reduces friction. A meniscus tear can occur as a result of a sporting activity or an accident.

4. Runner’s knee

Runner’s knee is a condition wherein the knee cap goes out of line due to excessive stress on the lower bone in the leg (called Tibia). This might occur as a result of an injury to the knee. As the bones supporting the kneecap go out of alignment, it may cause the clicking sound when the knee is bent.

5. Unnecessary tissue around the knee

In some cases, a person might experience the development of unnecessary tissue around the knee. This may be due to an injury to the knee that hasn’t been treated or healed properly. As a result of this, the tissue can come in between the joints causing the clicking sound with the movement of the knee.

In normal conditions, your knees might click due to excess air trapped in the knee joint. But if the clicking is accompanied with swelling and pain, you should seek expert advice without delay.
