How to manage Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel is a narrow space between the palm and forearm through which the wrist bones, nerves, ligaments and tendons pass. Median nerve which controls sensation and movement of thumb and first three fingers of the hand, also passes through this space. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when this median nerve is compressed due to narrowing of the passage as a result of swelling or any other illness. It is manifested by pain, numbness and swelling of the fingers and hand.

What are the causes behind this syndrome?

The compression of the median nerve and subsequent pain is mainly due to the swelling and inflammation of the wrist. The possible risk factors or causes leading to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include:
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Fracture or injury to the wrist
  • Over-extension of the wrist due to typing or playing musical instruments
  • Poor wrist posture while using the computer
  • Frequent use of vibratory handtools
  • Cysts or growths in the tendons passing through the narrow space
How can you manage the pain caused by this syndrome?

The mild to moderate stages of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be managed through the following ways:

1. Avoid overextension of the wrist
Try to keep the wrist in neutral position and refrain from over-bending or repeated bending of the wrists. While using a handtool or doing any manual work, avoid putting too much stress on the wrists. Do not grip the tool too tightly.

2. Ice packs
Ice packs can give you temporary relief from pain, swelling and inflammation of the wrist. Apply ice wrapped in a cloth for 5-10 minutes. Repeat it for 2-3 times a day.

3. Ergonomics
Make the workplace or the things that you are using at work wrist-friendly. Use tools that don’t require greater force or grip while using it. If you are using the keyboard and mouse, keep the wrists straightened or use wrist rests. Your wrists and forearms must be in a straight line. The height of the table should be such that you don’t have to hunch over to work. The computer screen should be at eye level. Do not keep your wrists on the edge of the table or desk you are working at.

4. Frequent breaks
Give your wrists regular periods of rest whether you are doing manual work or using hand tools. If possible, rest your often used hand for a while and use the other hand. In this way, the work would get distributed between the two hands. When your hands feel achy and tired, stretch out your arms and adjust your position or change your posture.

5. Sleeping posture
Keeping the wrist bent or tucked under the head or pillow while sleeping can compress the median nerve causing further pain. Place your hand or wrist flat on the mattress so that it is in a straight position. Use of splints as mentioned earlier can prevent the bending of wrists at night.

6. Weight management
Obesity or excessive weight can put pressure on the wrist and compress the median nerve. Therefore, keep your weight stable according to your height by maintaining a proper diet, exercise regimen and lifestyle.

7. Wrist splint
A wrist splint can keep your wrist in a straightened position thus reducing pressure on the median nerve, especially during sleep. It acts as a stabilizer for the wrist. It is necessary to slowly move the hand and wrist during and after the use of wrist splints as its prolonged use might stiffen or weaken the muscles. Make sure that the splint is of good quality, otherwise it may not serve its purpose.

8. Treatment of the related medical condition
As Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be due to other illnesses, it is important to pay attention to the underlying problem for proper treatment of the syndrome.
