Too Much Exercise Increases Risk Of Arthritis

It is a well known fact that exercise keeps the joints mobile, helps to control weight and strengthens the muscles. But if you exercise more than you should then you are doing more harm than good.

A new study, presented in the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), shows that people who exercise too much are in danger of getting Arthritis. The researchers worked with 136 men and 100 women of healthy weight, without prior pain or other symptoms. The study observed the participants as they exercised regularly.

What the study found

The study shows that people who undertake high levels of physical activity may be unwittingly damaging their knees and increasing the risk of contracting osteoarthritis.

The researchers took MRI scans of study participants' knees, looking for signs of bone, joint and cartilage damage. 93% of people who did high-intensity exercise suffered cartilage damage. The researchers found out that knee injuries were more common and more severe among those who engaged in high - intensity exercise.

The result

The study concluded that high-impact, weight-bearing activities such as running and jumping are bad for knee health. Conversely, low-impact activities, such as swimming and cycling, may protect diseased cartilage and prevent healthy cartilage from developing disease. The participants' age or sex didn't affect their risk of knee injury.

How much exercise do you need?

While the actual requirement will vary from person to person, the general advice is to get at least 30 minutes of low-intensity aerobic exercise at least 5 days a week. If you want to lose
weight, then spend at least half an hour in the gym and watch your diet closely. If you want to tone up your muscles, then add strength training to the routine.
