Find Out If You Have Rheumatoid Arthritis

Do you feel the knuckles in your hand are always swollen and red? Are your hands so weak that you cannot make a fist anymore? Do you feel tired all the time? Beware – these are all symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease. It can strike at any age, and if you don’t get it properly diagnosed and treated, you could end up painfully crippled and deformed.

While it is clearly devastating for the joints, Rheumatoid Arthritis can affect other organs as well, and greatly reduce your life span. Although there are several treatment plans, Rheumatoid Arthritis is prone to remission.

Early identification and diagnosis is absolutely important for treating Rheumatoid Arthritis effectively.

Rheumatoid  Arthritis: Signs and Symptoms

1. Swelling of joints: One or more of your large knuckle joints will be swollen. It is often in joints on both hands. The swelling feels rather tender and slightly soft. The swollen area will feel warm and look reddish.

2. Long-term swelling: If one of the large knuckles has been swollen and painful for more than six weeks, it could be a sign of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

3. Morning swelling: People with Rheumatoid Arthritis experience swelling under the foot or heel, especially in the morning.

4. Rheumatoid Nodules: You may have flu-like symptoms such as low-grade fevers and fatigue. Small tender bumps may develop under the skin, often near the back of the elbow. These are called Rheumatoid Nodules.

5. Weakness: You may find it difficult to make a complete fist. You may have unusually tender
swelling on the top of your wrists. If your elbows are involved, it may be difficult to straighten them completely.

6. Blood test report: Certain blood tests may help determine whether you have Rheumatoid Arthritis. The tests usually look for two kinds of antibodies - Rf (Rheumatoid factor) and CCP (anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide). One way of measuring the inflammation is by finding out the ESR or Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate.
