Half Of Adults Are At Risk Of Getting Knee Arthritis

Knee arthritis is a condition in which the cartilage (natural cushioning between joints) wears away. Then the bones of the joints rub more closely against one another. The constant rubbing results in pain, swelling, stiffness and decreased ability to move about.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina were able to estimate the risk of developing symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis. They studied the data on 3,068 people. Participants were all 45 years old or older. They were evaluated twice over an average period of six years.

Overall, researchers found that the risk of having Knee Osteoarthritis was 44.7%.  The gender, education level and race did not appear to affect the risk of developing arthritis.

Obese people have a risk of 46.9% in developing knee osteoarthritis while people of average weight have a risk of 30.2%.

Since knee arthritis is a chronic illness, it may never go away.  It has the power to disrupt your life in many ways. With arthritis, pain and fatigue may become a persistent aspect of your day. Physical changes from the disease may even distort the appearance of the knee joint. These changes can make you look ugly, old and disabled. The stress from the constant pain can accumulate and negatively affect how you feel about your life. Prolonged stress leads to frustration, anger, hopelessness, and even full-blown depression.

There are a number of ways in which arthritis can be treated. However, all of them are palliative and are plagued with a number of side effect.
