Gout is a common inflammatory problem which affects around 8
million people worldwide. Men are usually at greater risk of getting gout. When
the uric acid in the blood crystallizes and gets deposited in joints, tendons,
and surrounding tissues, an attack of gout ensues.
According to a new study, your risk for gout also increases
if you suffer from sleep apnea, a condition where your breathing periodically stops
while you are asleep.
The study
In a study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology, researchers combed through records in
a health database to compare people with and without sleep apnea. The medical
records of 9865 people with sleep apnea were studied.
After one year, people with sleep apnea were about 50% more
likely to have had an attack of gout.
But why?
There are two possible explanations for this connection:
Firstly, both conditions have obesity as a risk factor.
People who have gout attack are usually overweight. Excess weight is one of the
key factors behind a gout attack as well as sleep apnea.
Secondly, sleep apnea leads to hypoxia, a condition in which
the lack of adequate oxygen in the blood causes the cells to break down. This
leads to an increase in the concentration of uric acid in the body.
What to do?
Will treating sleep apnea help reduce the risk of gout? More
research is needed to answer this question. Nonetheless, you should talk to
your doctor about this newly discovered connection.
Change your diet and lifestyle
- Avoid eating red meat and seafood as they can increase uric acid levels.
- Stay away from drinks with high fructose corn syrup.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Adopt an exercise program to help lose excess weight.
- Take plenty of vitamin C in the form of oranges and bell peppers.
